Day 16 of the Phillips Snowcase advent calendar. Label is pretty. 341ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours jet black with a thin brown head that leaves a ring of archway lace around the glass.

Smells of cocoa powder, granola, and coffee with faint sour milk.

Tastes of bittersweet chocolate, mild black coffee, brown sugar and roast malt. Faintly earthy hops.

Feels finely carbonated and smooth. Medium bodied and easy to drink. Finishes kind of sweet, with more brown sugar and coffee.

Verdict: Recommended. I was hoping it would be better because I liked the label, but is still a nice, pleasant milk stout.

Bomber poured into a nonic pint glass. Opaque brown-black (or is it truly brown at all?) with quick breaking tightly packed mocha colored bubbles rimming the glass. Aroma features the promised lactic sweetness, reminds one of condensed milk in black tea, with some light roast coffee, caramels, milk chocolate, and faintly earthy hops. A puff of ashtray. Palate mirrors this closely, dry and slightly woody for the style but certainly hits the right targets nonetheless. The aforementioned chocolate, coffee, and condensed milk flavors meld together nicely, although there is a charred acidity that skews things away from my prior expectations. A dry nutty note emerges late. Not getting anything fruity. The mouthfeel is appropriately smooth although not silky smooth, creamy but still in more robust stout territory by my reckoning. A tad chalky. Moderate body I suppose, with more carbonation than expected. Good old Phillips. They've never cocked up a style, although they manage to impart their distinct woody house yeast character to most of their brews and I'm often left wondering if this is a plus or a minus. At the end of the day, I've reviewed a shit ton of their beers and will continue to do so.

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate brown with two fingers of frothy mocha head.

Smell - roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, milk chocolate, faint earthy hops.

Taste - Roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, milk chocolate, faint earthy hops, and slight oat graininess. All flavours are coming out at the same intensity.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with tad bit of cocoa and milk chocolate.

Overall - A milk stout with most of the right flavours. I feel like some of the lactose sweetness is missing as well as a creamy texture that I generally associate with milk stouts. Otherwise, nice to see another offering from this brewery.

Very interesting - different, not what I was expecting. The sweetness (added lactose) makes this much different than any stout I have encountered. Overall, I enjoyed the combination of dark malt, coffee and Quick chocolate syrup flavors I encountered. This disappeared quickly and would be a welcome substitute for hot chocolate after a day of skating or sledding.

650ml bottle, with a sort of psychedelic acid-trip themed label, and at least one egregious bovine pun in the accompanying text.

This beer pours a pretty solid black abyss, with two pudgy fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and somewhat creamy light brown head, which leaves some streaky island promontory lace around the glass as it genially recedes.

It smells of bittersweet cocoa powder, toasty caramel malt, condensed milk, oaten cereal, a wee root beer soda character, and faint earthy, weedy hops. The taste is semi-sweet milk chocolate, weakly roasted bready caramel malt, slightly acrid lactic notes, a lessened breakfast cereal oat graininess, and the same touchy hop notes from the nose.

The carbonation is fairly involved, in a lightly frothy and yet ebullient manner, the body an adequate medium weight, and generally smooth, nothing really mussing about here. It finishes on the sweet side, just, the lactose and still slightly charred caramel carrying us out of the mire.

A decent enough version of the style, which is the very least one usually expects from this brewery. Cool that they're still cranking out new stuff, in light of their Snowcase being one of the sales du jour in Western Canada right now, the saving grace of every late-arriving beer-lover's better half this time of year. Anyways, I do digress - this is a pleasant, and mostly engaging milk stout - maybe stare at the frozen stars in the sky while you drink it.
