Props to joemcgrath27 for hooking up this treat...

A - Pours nice and dark with a ruby red tint, thumb of head with decent retention and some sporadic lacing.

S - Sweet milk chocolate and cocoa, sugary molasses, hint of booziness and a touch of leafy greens.

T - Flavours are deliciously smooth, nice cocoa and chocolate malts come through alongside a hint of burnt espresso and some leafy bitter greens and marshmallows on the finish. The ABV is incredibly well hidden and adds only a hint of sweetness on the finish.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and surprisingly wet.

O - A tasty Baltic porter that boasts a solid flavour profile, incredibly well hidden ABV and a tasty sweetness making it the perfect dessert drink. Super stoked I had the opportunity to take it for a spin.

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate/cola brown with a 1/2 finger width of bubbly beige head (that recedes quickly).

Smell - Dark chocolate, malts, cocoa, hint of woodiness.

Taste - The chocolate and malt flavours are strongest, with the bitter cocoa and roasted tastes as a supporting role. Nice bitterness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and smoothness.

Overall - An interesting collaboration between Garrison and Phillips Brewing. This porter has some nice roasted flavours and is well constructed in its body.

From a 650 ml brown bottle. Pours out a deep black, not fully opaque as some dull cola hues shine through when held to direct light. Tall spongy light beige head that retains.

Dry roasty malt on the nose, some espresso notes, dry dark cocoa.

Dark and roasty malt up front in the flavour, dry subtle char in the middle, followed by a dry roasty finish and aftertaste. Some mild treacle starts to show up in the aftertaste as it warms. It comes across as one-dimensional on the surface, but it works, especially in conjunction with the other aspects of the beer.

Speaking of which, the mouthfeel is full, velvety in texture yet augmented by a fairly assertive carbonation for the style.

This works for me, comes across more like a strong porter than an actual Baltic Porter, but that aside it's an offering worth seeking out if you're into dark ales, especially porters. Not too sweet, not too dry, it sits well in that balanced middle zone. I'll be snapping up more while it's available.

A - nearly impenetrable black, thumb of mocha head retained well with some random lacing
S - sweet chocolate and light coffee malts, some bready notes, with a slight mustiness
T - a sweet & sour milky chocolate up front, charcoal smokiness, with mild breadiness with a subtle booziness
M - medium carbonation with the body a little on the thin side, somewhat chalky
O - I like the collaborative effort concept and must admit I had high expectations, its a good effort but there is just something about the sourness that doesn't work for me, but still worth a try

650ml bottle, agreeably more available here in Wild Rose Country than the previous east coast oriented incarnation.

This beer pours a solid black, with slight cola undertones, and two fingers of foamy beige head, which leaves a nice wall of painted Swiss cheese lace around the glass as it gradually abates.

It smells of sweet milk chocolate, some mild cold coffee grounds, earthy hops, and a bit of warming alcohol. The taste is chocolate malt, a bit of woody astringency, some caramel/toffee, a nice subtle lactic sweetness, and a slight lurking booze warming.

The carbonation is fairly sedate, the body an airy medium weight, and generally smooth, nothing really messing with expectations here. It finishes off-dry, the chocolate and milk solids in full effect.

A pretty decent strong porter, the big ABV a non-starter as far as my perception is concerned, which I suppose could be the only 'problem' with this tasty offering.

A: 1/4" mocha coloured head over black/cola coloured liquid.

S: Coffee and toasted malt.

T: Toasted, coffee and toffee malt along with a nutty taste that many Phillips beers seem to have along with some yeast.

M: Medium to thin viscosity with a medium level of fine carbonation.

O: A drinkable but run of the mill Baltic Porter. The nutty malt that used by Phillips Brewing Company works for some beers, such as their blue buck and hop circle; but for others that are more malt forward such as this and their trainwreck barleywine it just doesn't quite work for me.

Lovely nose on this beer, all coffee and roasted dark malt.I liked this beer as it had the right balance between drinkability and sipping complexity. The mouthfeel is on the middleground with a not too thick , not too thin feel. I would love to get a few more of these but they are probably gone off the shelves by now

650ml bottle poured into tulip 15/1/12

A dark cola with a two finger mocha head that quickly falls leaving no lace

S nutty milk chocolate with a little dark fruit but the booze could be better concealed

T some burnt wood on top of what I smell, a little bit of a sour milky thing going for it, not quite "off" but not great either, I'm not picking up on as much booze as the nose

M a little thin for the style, enough carbonation and not as much heat as I would expect from the smell

O a little light and not quite as rich as I was hoping for, still decent but room for improvement

I was expecting just a little more from two of my favorite Canadian breweries, a little boozy and a little thin, its worth trying but I wouldn't go searching

Listed under Phillips (even though the BIPA is under Garrison) as they appear on the top of the label.

A nice version of a baltic. Dark brow-ruby in colour with a nice, thin brown head. The head coats the inside of the glass nicely. Nice, rich malty smell. Light coffee, plum, faint hints of wine. Chocolate in the background.

Dry, slightly woody hints in the taste. Chocolate, malts, black coffee. Lingering, wafting alcohol, but not very strong. Rich, very smooth. Nice bitterness at the end.

Low, mild carbonation. Decent mouthfeel, but maybe could be a bit thicker. A good collaboration from two great breweries.
