A: pours like liquid molasses. Brown head.
S: Big moka: dark chocolate, espresso ... very intense but balanced
T: kind of flat. After such a big aroma I'm disappointed that a big taste isn't there. Mild coffee, moka, "roastey" flavours. Warm alcoholic finish.
M: Big, full-bodied ... which is what you'd expect from an 8% stout.
O: It's OK but not up to the usual high standards that I'm used to with Phillips. We're seeing a lot of coffee stouts these days so you need to be pretty good to stand out. Unfortunately this one doesn't.

A - near impenetrable black, thumb of dark tan head held at half a finger
S - medium coffee and nutty aromas, a bit of mustiness and leather
T - dark roast coffee and old leather maltiness dominate, touch of cola and a lingering mustiness
M - fairly heavy with a smooth start, mildly chalky, full finish
O - not outstanding but definitely well done, easy drinking with a nice mix of rich flavours

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate black with a finger width of mocha head.

Smell - Roasted espresso bean, chocolate, brewed coffee, cocoa.

Taste - Roasted coffee and barley malts with a cocoa finish. Slight acidity.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light-medium carbonation.

Overall - A respectable coffee stout from Phillips. The right flavours are there, but it seems like something is missing - perhaps a more complex blend of other flavours (dark chocolate for example). Still tasty though.

650ml bomber poured into tulip 5/3/13

A she looks pretty dark with a deep cola edge, two fingers of mocha foam hangs on for a few sips but leaves no lace

S cold coffees strong and pleasant, some chocolate and a little char and general dark roast, its rather straightforward but solid

T roast is somehow darker with char and burnt coffee, just a little honey I didn't smell and the booze is faint, tastes good but I preferred the smell

M thin for the style and a few extra bubbles, not much for heat but lacking body with a burnt coffee finish, a low point for this beer

O its decent but there's room for improvement, the coffee notes are nice but its lacking the intensity and complexity of the better big stouts out there

priced well but lacking a little something, the coffee aspect is working for it but the Imperial Stout part is not quite there. Well concealed booze and easy enough to drink for a 8%er, the booze closes one eye and the caffeine opens the other

A: Black, impenetrable to light, a finger and a half or so of head the colour of cafe au lait.

S: Dark roasted malts, burnt sugar.

T: I can definitely believe it’s made with espresso. More than anything else, that’s what I taste. Now, I like my coffee dark with plenty of milk, and I think I like my beer without coffee. Personal preference aside, this beer is certainly what it claims to be.

F: Maybe a little thin for a stout? It leaves a weird film in my mouth, kind of like when you drink the last of coffee brewed with a French press - a bit gritty.

O: Glad I tried it, probably wouldn’t get it again.

Black Jackal pours an inky black with a nice brown head. The aroma is a nice blend of coffee and chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is the same, but the pasted malt flavor gives way to an astringent coffee flavor.
There is enough sweetness to balance to the bitterness from the coffee. Coffee lingers in the finish.
