Served at 37 degrees in wine glass. Pours slightly hazy but nice golden color

Clear malt character in the nose and nice noble hop flavor on the palate ... all and all solid German Pilsner

Look: pristine clarity, pale yellow straw color, fizzy but small head,

Aroma: earthy and malty, very biscuity, fresh sliced ciabatta bread

Taste: well balanced, malty up front with bread and biscuity flavors that then give into a very fizzy carbonated finish with just enough hop bitters to balance it off

Mouthfeel: very fizzy, long fizzy tingly finish that lasts 30 seconds or more, medium body

Overall: very good German Pilsner interpretation, but maybe just a little too carbonated. Overall very refreshing though

12 oz bottle from VA.
Typical golden body except for a slight haze. Decent head.
The aroma may lean towards mild but the flavor is bold for style. Dry, near medium body with medium carbonation.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery "Pils"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, packaging date is illegible
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Unfortunately, marred by excessive yeast flavor, and I mean actual yeast flavor, not fruitiness, my bottle of Hardywood's Pils has a "green beer" character to it. Is this the norm? I have no idea. It appears there might be a packaging date ink jetted below the body label but it's illegible, and to be honest, age doesn't seem to be the issue unless it's just too young.

It displays a hazy golden body beneath a creamy head of bright white that holds well and leaves some nice lacing about the glass. The aroma is yeasty, but it also displays bright and fresh floral and grassy hops, a touch of grainy, almost straw-like sweet malt, and just a hint of lemon. The flavor follows, but again the yeast gets in the way. Perhaps this was just a bottle that was filled at the end of the bottling run and got a little too much yeast into it? I can only hope. It seems nicely balanced, but with more of a Czech pils level of bitterness than a northern German pils (although it could be southern German, which is generally less bitter - no one talks about that). It is a touch spicy though, so there could be some Saazer hops as well but I'm not sure.

Conclusion? Up in the air. I'm going to have to find a better, or at least different, sample to ascertain as to whether or not this is the usual. I can see that there's a good beer beneath the yeastiness with a nice pilsner malt and noble hop character but as it stands it's not that great. For my rating I've given the benefit of a doubt until I can procure another bottle. My original score was a 3.57

This beer really reminds of the beers of my youth and also reminds me that I rarely drink pilsener's any more.

Expected bitterness on the finish, certainly true to the style. It's just not a style I seek out.

I simply love this locally brewed example of a German style pilsner. It really reminds me of the fresh brewed German beers I enjoyed when I lived in Germany. Fresh tasting with a crisp hops bite, this has quickly become one of my favorite session beers.

Very recently had the DC Brau Pils, which I really liked. This wasn't quite as good, but I still enjoyed it. The difference was a little bit in the body, but still, this was good. Would definitely have again.
