Notes: Hardywood Foolery is a huge Imperial Stout aged for eight months in bourbon barrels. Massive chocolate, vanilla, and caramel flavors are preceded by aromatic hints of dark cherry, tobacco, leather and oak. Thick and rich, Foolery brings rounded bourbon character contributions from the barrels and a nice warming finish.

Really great. So much barrel character to this one. This one was moderately sweet- Nothing compared to some of the stuff being produced now. Not sure which year this one was as I didn’t see it listed on the bottle. Hope to get to try again

Wow - this is a stunner. Probably the best BA milk stout I've ever had. Balance is perfect. Barrel character is there, but dialed back. I know Hardywood is well regarded, but they should be higher on the hype list if they are making beers like this.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown / black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a small amount of creamy, tan-colored head that lasted a below average amount of time. Pretty good lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, dark fruit, bourbon, and vanilla.

T: Tasted of a good shot of bourbon (and the accompanying barrel, a moderate amount of roasted malt, some cherry notes, a hint of vanilla, a little caramel, and a ton of chocolate. An extremely complex, aggressive, powerful flavor. The booze isn't all that noticeable. Well-balanced and tasty.

F: A fair amount of carbonation with a silky smooth finish. Full-bodied.

O: This is an incredibly well made and flavorful beer. Very much drinkable.

750 ml bottle into a snifter. Had 10/7/17.

Pours near black, opaque, with a one inch head of darker foam and some soapy lacing. Aromas of bourbon, malt, chocolate, caramel, oak, raisins, figs, molasses, some tobacco, light vanilla. Pretty awesome. The taste is just as great- bourbon, roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, oak, vanilla, raisins, some molasses and licorice. Smooth, a solid full body, well carbonated.

Wow. This is one to seek out. Terrific aroma and flavor, both well developed. Almost crushable, which is crazy for the ABV. Hope to have this again.

2016 bottle. Black in color. Tan head.

For some reason this wasn't on par with the other hardywood beers I've had. Trickery was much better. Chocolate and cocoa with bourbon, but not overly thick and not a huge barrel flavor. Solid, but I had higher expectations.

The beer pours a fairly light head. The beer itself is a dark chocolate black with so smooth syrup like texture.

Delicious smell and taste. Good moderate bourbon note that mixes well with the milk chocolate. The smell is mainly a strong bourbon and chocolate. The taste is much better with a sweet milk t and bourbon with a light lactose in the finish.

The feel is heavy body but slightly syrupy. Light, effervescent carbonation.

Bottle poured into chalice glass. Black, heavy looking poor similar to Old Dubh; little carbonation but nice head. Oak, molasses, chocolate greet the nose. Full body with chocolate on front, a fig type fruit mid-palate and the oak bourbon notes on back. This is an enjoyable beer.

The last bottle from a trade with cejaev, a tango we’re going to attempt again…soon. 750ML C&C bottle split with my wife.

Black. Low visible carbonation. Smells like there’s more malts than science can actually get into a small space - damn the science, I’m sure it’s wrong. WRONG.

Foolery: exceeding my expectations for the last 63 seconds. One of the few beers I’ve ever had that can match the intense intensity of Cigar City’s big malty stouts, deeper than the holes of Basswood. Smooth bourbon dessert, chocolate dessert, vanilla, brandy, more bourbon, smooth & smoother & smoothester. Deep, abiding dusty chocolate sweetness. Pretty sure I could have taken the entire bomber & set the alarm for 1PM tomorrow.

I know this isn’t some under-the-radar local brewpub that nobody’s ever heard of, but Hardywood’s barrel program is underrated like a Jim Hoey fastball. When it hits the strike zone. Which is never. Wait, what? Never mind. Excellent beer & looking forward to more Hardywood.

Bottle shared by Matthew. Thank you! I've been wanting to try this for some time now. Served alongside Trickery.

Near black, inky body with a small beige head. Chocolate, vanilla, perhaps hints of cherry. Sweet, but not too. Absolutely delicious. Bourbon character is assertive, elegant, well integrated into the overall flavor profile. The folks at Hardywood make world class stouts. Fact.

750ml bottle thanks to Darrel. Pours out an dark inky black color capped with a tight beige head. Aroma is a sweet shop melange of vanilla and chocolate, boozy barrel notes and rich roast grains. Taste adds more lactose notes, smoothing out the whole thing, lots of alcohol warmth, sweet, creamy, delicious.

Pours one shade shy of black with no head. Nose expresses chocolate syrup and a hint of ethanol. Taste consistent with nose, albeit more syrupy then suggested by the nose. Booze is also magnified although I don't get the barrel. Mouthfeel light-medium in body with a carbonation that is almost still. All and all, quite tasty; however not much complexity to this one.

This thing looked like pure burnt motor oil. Thick body as it poured into the glass. No head whatsoever. Smell is roasted malts and bourbon. Taste is the same. Not as bourbon-forward as I would have thought, but sweetness and roasted malts. You do get that nice bourbon flavor, but not over powering. It was even better when it hit room temperature. Feel is thick. Love my stouts this way. Overall, this is a near perfect barrel aged milk stout. Loved everything about it.

This beer was on guest tap at Funky Buddha Brewery. This is a huge 13% ABV Stout that looks jet black with a thin tan head of foam. Smells of strong quality bourbon and chocolate. The taste follows with bourbon and a milk chocolate that makes it pretty smooth. This beer reminds me of BCBS with a little lactose to add a very slight creaminess. It's a sipper but well worth the time to drink the 12 ounces poured into my snifter.

4 oz pour at Lost and Found for $6. Dark, dark brown, no head or lacing. Not a huge nose, but huge flavor. Milk chocolate and prune up front and more dark fruit through the middle. More dark chocolate through finish with a light bitterness and cocoa chalk. Sweet bourbon and some oak come through in the end as well. Lots of ethanol throughout, a bit too strong for me. Lowish carb, medium full body, but not chewy.

Poured a black body with one-finger khaki head and no lace. Chocolate, vanilla, wood/oak, molasses, booze along with black cherry hit me in the aroma. Milky and woody smooth, dangerously light-bodied, this beer is easy to drink and packs a chocolate, vanilla, caramel/toffee (at one point it seemed like butterscotch) sweet taste that balances with touches of dark fruits (black cherry and figs/raisins) along with roasted malts and touch of burnt/toasted malts. Finishes a little bit dry and boozy and is a very enjoyable beer.

L: Warm mocha and dark roast coffee hues with a thin sandy head
S: Oak, dark chocolate, and piping hot java notes
T: Luxurious and creamy milk chocolate, mocha, vanilla, and caramel
M: Creamy and full-bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation
O: This was a superbly crafted BA stout. The chocolaty and milky notes of the underlying stout were well complemented by the barrel aging with only a minor hint of heat. Overall this was a big, decadent stout that delivered complex and well integrated flavors with a matching thick and chewy body. Highly recommended.

750 mL bottle. Smells really boozy. Bourbon. Heavy molasses. Tastes really boozy as well. Strong bourbon. Quickly becomes fudgy and sweet. Boozy as all getout. Molasses and a little astringency in the finish. Heavy. Very hot. I can't get past the sugar and the alcohol.

A- Pours thick, black, and completely opaque, with a large brown head of small tight bubbles. The head recedes slowly to a thick film that leaves nice lacing.

S- This is decadent, exploding with dark chocolate, prunes, figs, fudge, vanilla beans, and some charred oak. Absolutely amazing!

T- The flavor is right there with the aroma. Loads of fudgy chocolate and dark fruits! The prunes and figs are especially prevalent. The sweetness is balanced by some roasty malt. Nice vanilla notes round it out along with mild charred oak. This is delicious!

M- The mouth feel is coating, thick, and viscous. Light carbonation and a vinous finish.

O- This beer is the real deal! One of the best straight up bourbon BA stouts out there!

Appearance: pours a pretty solid black, just a hint of mahogany near the edges. a small brown head that hands around nicely and leaves a creamy tan lacing. brown viscous sludge hangs around as it swirls. completely dark and opaque.

Smell: brown sugar, bourbon, oak, chocolate, molasses and roasted malt.

Taste: opens up with a strong milk chocolate, making its way into more dark malts with roasted character. brown sugar, bourbon and oak. light dark fruit near the end.

Mouthfeel: thick and chewy with a fair amount of bitterness. warming alcohol and some creaminess.

Overall: its got a lot of good going on but it falls flat. the bourbon character is a bit one noted and a little too smooth. The mouthfeel is nice but I still think it could use a bit more bitterness to take care of the high FG.

Bottle, 2020:
Pours dark and somewhat oily. The subdued amount of head is a deep chocolate brown. While it fades fairly quickly, the medium ring is strong and gets a brief revival every tip of the glass.

Nose is roasted malts with nice amounts of tobacco, leather, cherry, and spice. There is a slight soy aspect to it that translates to a pseudo umami note in the taste. Not that this is the main flavor, which comes from cherry-like pipe tobacco, roast, leather, and very well-integrated bourbon notes. There’s a sweetness involved here, but the roasted malts counter this to a degree, and any residual sweetness feeds into the bourbon and cherry to add a Bit of an Old Fashioned aspect to the brew.

Slick but fairly smooth despite a light amount of spicy alcohol heat. This beer is put together with the right flavors in the right proportions. So glad I got more of this after my first encounter where I enjoyed it but didn't have time to really sip it and get into it.

Initial quick take: Wow! Their description is basically on point. Light cherry in a see of dark chocolate, with leather and barrel; bourbon alcohol subdued. Must retry!

Hardywood continues to kill it with this series of beers. Pours pitch black, mild brown lacing. Smell & taste highlight the bourbon barrel. It's prominent and delicious. The mouthfeel is always what does it for me with these Hardywood beers. Phenomenal, milkshake-like. This was outstanding.
