Opaque black with a beige head that fades completely. Huge chocolate aroma with notes of vague fruit. Taste follows with boozy barrel accents. Full texture with low carbonation. Outstanding.

A touch sweet for my liking, but an awesome beer regardless. It is what you would expect it to be- Trickery/Foolery with a red wine kick. I expected this to be the lesser of the three by a decent margin, but it beat my expectations handily. Seek it out.

This is the best of the three in my opinion. The heat of the last two just dominated the tasting....this one finally seemed balanced. Pours thick and syrupy, like most heavies. Flavor is subtle sweet with hints of wine and tannin finish. Much more dry than the other haunting hardywood series beers. Very good beer.

2017 Vintage
750ml cork and cage bottle poured into an oversized wine glass

A- pours jet black with a motor oil consistency, producing a dark brown foamy head that has short retention before leaving just a ring behind

S- huge red wine notes pour out of the glass, bringing aromas of black currant, plum, black cherry, red apple skin, anise, dried cranberry, leather & earthy/woody oak. The base beer brings undertones of milk chocolate, vanilla cream, milk sugars and caramel.

T- red wine is immediately noticed up front with notes of black currant, black cherry, red plum & red apple skin. Mid-palate brings rich dark milk chocolate, vanilla whipping cream, molasses, caramel/toffee & fig. The finish gives woody oak and has a surprisingly dry, tannic linger

M- thick and viscous body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy silky mouthfeel and a velvety finish that lingers with just a hint of alcohol warmth

O- an outstanding barrel treatment adds multiple layers to the base beer, rich dark fruit throughout, outstanding

On draft at Brewery. Fantastic stout. The red wine barrel aging is different and wonderful. Big tan head. Creamy smooth mouth feel. This is a more than equal partner to the Trickery, Foolery trinity.

L: pours pitch black with no head
S: sweet wine barrel
T: huge wine, starts sweet but turns drying like a big cab. There are some chocolate notes but the wine is overpowering all.
F: smooth, but drying.
O: too much wine, needs to be double barreled with bourbon.

This one pours a pretty silky looking dark black, with a small head, a good amount of lacing.

The red wine barrel-aging seems to have super accentuated the fruity aspects of this beer, I get dark cherry, sweet red wine, raisins, plums, all drizzled in luscious milk chocolate syrup. There's a bit of roastiness on the nose, but not a ton.

This is definitely a very sweet beer, but luckily it doesn't get off-putting or overwhelming. The red wine barrel is very present, adding a nice layer of fruity sweetness to the beer. Whatever wine was in the barrel originally seems to have been a pretty sweet one. There's sweet cherries covered in chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, a little bit of roast, and light oak.

This is medium bodied, with a pretty creamy mouthfeel, and a normal level of carbonation for the style. The alcohol is not really present at all, which is a feat in itself.

It's always cool to see well done BA stouts in "alternative" barrels. Bourbon can get kind of boring sometimes.

Great stout the wine comes thru very nicely. I like the trickery better but like ruse better then foolery. Another excellent beer out of Hardywood. Go RVA!

The beer pours a very light and bubbly creamy head that dissipates quickly but leaves a nice brown ring around the inside of the glass. The beer itself is really good to look and very alluring. It's a deep melted milk chocolate black with a nice syrup like texture that shows it definitely has some heft to it.

The smell is fantastic with a lot of subtle notes that blend in well with one another. The beer has a fairly strong wood note emanating from the beer along with a subtle red wine note that is hard to detect. The chocolate note is actually the second strongest note underneath the wood. The chocolate note comes off as more of a bitter milk chocolate than a dark chocolate note. Other notes such as vanilla are just as subtle. The smell also has a slight alcohol note that you normally find in wine, which works very with the other notes.

The taste is fantastic. The taste has a delicious milk chocolate note mixed with cocoa. The red wine wooden barrel note underneath the beer notes are fairly moderate and pretty good. The red wine note is subtle and berry like that comes out more in the taste than it does in the smell and adds an interesting contrast to the sweeter notes with a slightly acidic and sweet note.

The feel is good. It's a heavy bodied but feels a bit lighter and easier to drink than expected. The feel is milky and slightly viscous with a slightly tingly carbonation that adds a nice tickle to it. There is a slight thinness to the beer but adds rather than subtracts from the beer.

Overall, this was an enjoyable beer and worth the hassle getting my hands on it. The notes are fairly complex but blend very well together to create a delicious and indulgent beer.

Big, bold mocha colored head that leaves virtually no lacing atop this pitch black beer. Nose is massive molasses, caramel and Tootsie Roll. Tart up front, next taste is dead on Tootsie Roll. Following that fun is the tart's explanation a little, as a slightly vinous quality surfaces. Not overwhelming, but I do find a bit of wine drenched oak on the exit. Feel is one of a kind. Super silky, cloying in a way that covers the entire mouth. Aftertaste is only slightly sweet with a decent amount of coffee lingering.

I never thought an imperial milk stout aged in red wine barrels wouldn't be great. Wow was I wrong. So tasty, with great flavors of chocolate, dark fruit, and a hint of leather. Best BA milk stout I've ever had
