Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience.

Hardywood Singel's stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

I love this brewery, and one of their base beers that has seemed to have eluded my reviews. Thanks to Craft_Compulsive (Reddit) for this one.

Pours into my Hoarders tulip with a big creamy fluffy 1.5 finger head that fades at a med to slower pace, lots of spotty messy lacing, a very hazy and slight murky orange-yellow golden bright colored beer.

Nose is like a nice Belgian pale, good Belgian esters and Belgian malts, toasty Belgian pale malt, with a little sweetness, grassy malts with grassy hops as well, hops that turn a little spicy as well, some mild fruity esters and typical nice Belgian single yeast, faint apple pear like esters.

Taste brings more of the same, nice Belgian pale malts that seems like it should be sweet but is actually quite dry, as a touch of booze hints in the background, with plenty more esters in there, a nice Belgian yeast, faint apple skin and pear notes, maybe even a touch of banana. then hops kick in, grassy at first, turning a little spicy later, it seems to follow the nose a lot. Fair bitterness throughout, like an Americanized Belgian pale. Finish is dry like the rest of the beer, big spicy hops and fair bitterness lingering, a bit more of the Belgian yeast esters, touch of phenols as well that hints at booze, mild Belgian pale malt and even a little honey malt like flavor lingering.

Mouth is med bod, lots of fluffy carbonation, and faint phenolic booze warmth.

Overall pretty nice beer, nice base Belgian pale ale, good malt profile, very nice yeast profile with good esters, etc, hops are maybe the only downfall a bit, as it gets too spicy hop flavor and too bitter in general, too Americanized, but still enjoyable.

I purchased this at Brass Rail enjoyed chilled in a tulip

The color is golden with moderately hazed look with thin head of white with fine bead and carbonation is visible with lace that sticks in rings. The smell is spicy with lightly vegetal odor and mild sweet aroma with a gentle grainy herbal smell. The feel is tangy with yeast texture and medium high carbonation with light alcohol spice and mild malt texture with low sweetness in the feel with a mildly dry finish.

The taste is pleasant with yeast and phenolic lightly fruity flavor with subtle spice in the taste which could be yeast or hop derived with light ripe banana-like aspect and hint of pepper with some alcohol and hop bitterness in the finish. Overall I was pleased it is a pretty drinkable belgian but average for the style ...decent beer but on the spicy side for me-almost strong golden strength with moderately high alcohol level (tastewise)

12 oz. pour into a tulip, on draft.

A- Golden. Nice clarity. Head is white and a little delicate. Just a bit of lacing.

S- Belgian spice, a little fruity. The malt character is toasty.

T- Malt is similar as in aroma. A bit spicy, and maybe a bit of and earthy hop bitterness. Some fruity sweetness.

M- Bitterness and spice dry this one out quite a bit. Body is medium light.

O- A little too dry for me. But I enjoy most of the mild characteristics in this.
