Very Good
Farmhouse PumpkinFarmhouse Pumpkin
Notes: Brewed in the style of the farmhouse ales of Belgium's southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin utilizes a blend of rye, wheat and barley in the grain bill, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar clove and whole allspice harmonize with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root.

A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger. Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike and from the Village Garden. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

From a bottle into a draught glass. Pour had floofy head of beige with a relatively hazy pale golden amber body. Scent comes across as saison up front (good!) with notes of pumpkin and spice rounding out the back ... an interesting set of smells for a saison. Taste is exceptional, blending just a bit of bite from the saison with a delightfully smooth pumpkin that finishes with notes of spices added in (clove and ginger are most evident). Feel is smooth (can says soft and that feels right) with a lingering aftertaste that is just a touch bitter but rounded out by the pumpkin and spice notes. Overall a fascinating saison and a great fall beer that differs from the usual pumpkin lager or ales.

This is more of a Belgian than a pumpkin ale. Got to respect it for what it is, and it’s a Belgian with a hint of cinnamon overtones. Typical Belgian bubblegummy flavor. Almost no head and slightly sour smell. . Not what I was expecting but still an enjoyable beer.

Pours a clear amber color, minimal head. Has a really nice pumpkin pie spice aroma, I bet the clove and cinnamon the most. Has a good pumpkin flavor, I get the clove and cinnamon along with allspice and pumpkin purée. Really nice brown sugar flavor. Good carbonation, fairly medium bodied, seems to have an amber ale base. Overall a very tasty pumpkin beer.

Not terrible but I was pretty disappointed with this one from Hardywood. I've had pumpkin beers that I've enjoyed before but this one wasn't it. I can't quite put my finger on it but it just didn't taste right at all.

Pours without much head at all. Smells of hops and pumpkin. Very clear orange color. Tastes of pumpkin up front with hops after. Too hoppy for me, not something I would buy again.

Red-brown color with a thin beige head. Aromas of grass, yeast, and spice. Notes of cinnamon and other spices appear, but a bit delayed. Funky Belgian quality throughout. Alcoholic, slightly sweet note on the finish. Moderate level of carbonation. Interesting marriage of the Belgian style with the ubiquitous pumpkin ale.

Look: Orange Bronze, Not too dark.
Smell: Light Spices, Notes of Pumpkin and ginger.
Taste: Light notes of pumpkin and spice. Not too sweet. You can taste the alcohol, but it's not overwhelming.
Feel: Surprisingly light for a strong beer.

Surprisingly light for a 8.5% beer. You definitely taste the pumpkin and spice, without it being too candy like. The lightness means it's easier to drink, but I think I would have preferred this one to be a wee bit heavier on the palate.

L - Rust orange with some red hues. Light tan head that leaves behind some minimal lacing. The look is all Fall.
S - Predominantly pumpkin notes up front with minimal fall spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice. This is a really great smelling beer. Just like the look, the smell completely reminds me of Fall.
T - Follows the nose. Tons of ripe pumpkin flavors up front followed by your pumpkin pie/fall spices: nutmeg, allspice, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, etc. All with a nice malt backbone and typical saison yeast flavors to tie everything together. A slight earthy hop presence throughout as well.
F - medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Smooth with a lot of micro-bubbles.
O - This is a fantastic saison that completely delivers on it's promised flavor profile. You get pumpkin flavor with the typical Fall spices. This truly reminds me of Pumking in the flavor profile - however, I would say Pumking tastes like artificial pumpkin flavor compared to this. Hardywood's Farmhouse Pumpkin tastes "organic" in that everything tastes so fresh and the flavor profiles paired with the saison/farmhouse style really suits this beer well. Fantastic.

After a recent pumpkin beer tasting I learned I don't care for pumpkin beer. This poured a rusty brown; the smell was earthy and spicy; I couldn't escape the biting clove and boozy taste to really appreciate what else was going on in it. Overall, a decent beer if you like pumpkin beer.

A: Pours a fairly cloudy dark burnt orange in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising quickly along the edges of the glass and moderate copper + orange colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy off-white head that reduces to a large patch of thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer (about 85%) and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice, and ginger) with a light to moderate aroma of roasted pumpkins and moderate aromas of slightly spicy, slightly earthy saison yeast.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of doughy + bready malts with a moderate amount of brown sugar sweetness and a slightly heavier than moderate flavor of roasted pumpkins. That is followed by moderate flavors of pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice, and ginger). Finally there is a moderate flavor of slightly spicy, slightly earthy saison yeast. Minimal amounts of bitterness but the spice flavors carry through the finish.

M: Medium bodied with slightly heavier than moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly effervescent.

O: Very enjoyable, creative, and easy to drink. I like the combination of Saison and Pumpkin Ale - it works quite successfully. The pumpkin, pumpkin pie spices, and earthy/spicy saison yeast provide harmonious flavors and aromas. Alcohol is well hidden.

L: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had an orange-y color and a hazy consistency. There was a two inch, foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Very good lacing here.

S: A big, enticing aroma of pumpkin, spices, Belgian yeast, and some malt.

T: Tasted of a good amount of Belgian-style yeast, a lot of pumpkin, a malty tinge, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, ginger), a sugary quality, and a little caramel. Quite a spicy flavor, even for a saison. The taste is deftly balanced. Pumpkin should have been added to a saison long ago.

F: A highly carbonated beer with a lively finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Pumpkin seems to fit right in with this style. Drinkable in a big, big way.

Pours a clear amber orange with a thin white head. Smells of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and fresh cut pumpkin. Medium body beer that doesn't linger long on the tongue. Tastes of pumpkin primarily, muted pumpkin pie spices, and has a pleasantly bitter bite to it. Overall, nothing overly impressive or must have about it, but certainly a nice pumpkin ale that would satisfy the want for one during fall time.

Very aromatic complex nose with a sweet slightly tart pumpkin fruitiness. Medium to light body with loads of caramel and ginger in the finish. The alcohol does come through more than I would prefer.
