Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.20%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed with baby ginger from Casselmonte Farm and wildflower honey from Bearer Farms, Hardywood Gingerbread Stout captures the terroir of central Virginia in a rich, creamy libation with a velvety mouthfeel and an intriguing evolution of flavors from milk chocolate and vanilla to honeycomb and cinnamon to a snap of ginger in the finish.

Deep, dark chocolate in color with a mahogany tint and a frothy, caramel colored head, Hardywood Gingerbread Stout offers aromatics of holiday spice originating from the ginger, and balanced with a generous dose of whole Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans and Vietnamese cinnamon. Milk sugar (lactose) contributes to the full body of this stout and tames its roasty character, while oats lend a silky quality. Enjoy fresh, or cellar for a special occasion. We hope Hardywood Gingerbread Stout contributes to your merriment this season.

2014 release. Guess this is 3 years old.

Dark chocolate brown body with a pinkish beige 2 finger head.

Aromas of ginger, maple sap, oatmeal, chocolate, and alcohol - I wanna say bourbon sweetness although there's no barrel to be found in the recipe. Lots of delicious spices waft up to the olfactory too.

Flavor is mostly absent honestly...and by that I mean it hides behind a watery body to start. I'm guessing this has to be consumed fresh. Behind the water, I get old crumbled gingerbread man, coffee grounds, molasses, nutmeg, and red hots. Ending on coffee and sympathetic fake sugar with breaths of ginger. As it warms it just gets awful. Awful.

Feel is pretty watery, but leaves an interesting coating on the palate, with some roasty dryness and biting carbonation. Just way too thin for a stout in any instance.

Well, Gingerbread Stout was a fail for me. Having a real hard time finishing it. I honestly think it's something that needs to be consumed fresh. Unfortunate, but I guess I can cross this off my list now :-(

Thanks to Jeremy for this one!
Pours a dark brown with tan foam that fades after a few minutes. Graham cracker, cinnamon, honey aromas. Tastes a little more stouty, though the ginger and cinnamon come out in spades. Light to medium bodied, a little thin but drinkable enough. Good festive holiday beer. Makes a good mixer with a coffee imperial stout.

Good looking stout coming out of the bottle. A slight hint of ginger and sweet malt comes through on the nose. Taste is sweet and very, very slightly holiday spiced. The brew is just too thin for the style as well. I want to like these Hardywood beers as it is an in state brewery. So far I just can't see the hype.

This beer has quite the reputation, but I cannot recommend it. Like the other stouts I have tried from them, this beer lacks substance for a big beer. It's too thin and I don't find much in the way of typical stout characteristics.

Looks almost black with dark khaki foam. Lots of lacing.
Gingerbread spice smell is dominant. Sweet and heavy. Warmth from alcohol is noticeable. Really does taste like gingerbread. Not a big fan of the lactose. Overall: great in small doses. Just the thing to get through the dark winter nights.

2016 batch, bottle into a red wine glass.

I don't quite understand the hype on this one. As someone else mentioned here it's as if someone mixed an OK base stout with Coca-Cola and ginger beer. The ginger isn't very pronounced, I get zero cinnamon or sweetness and the mouth feel is on the thin side.

Not bad but not something I would seek out.

Optics are expected, retention is minimal. Aroma is very nice and fairly decadent - definitely pick up the vanilla and cinnamon, and a sweetness from the honey is a very nice touch, though oddly the ginger wasn't very present and more of a lurker in the background. Taste has lots of flavor, and it is elegant and subtle. It would be easy to spam the ginger or cinnamon but everything here is very well blended. There is a roasted malt upfront, medium and smooth, with the ginger coming in next, and then silky vanilla flavors...maybe a tad too much lactose but that is really the only flaw, and it is minor. The ginger does heat up as the beer sits out though. Great example of a spiced beer that doesn't overcompensate with cloying flavor but has the confidence to let the natural flavors carry the load.
