With several talented artisan roasters in town, we invited Richmond’s beer and coffee lovers to vote in a blind taste-off on our collaboration partner for the 2012 Mocha Belgique. They selected Black Hand Coffee Company! Black Hand’s custom roasted Brazilian coffee melds artfully with chocolate and caramel malts, cacao nibs and the fluffy character bestowed by our signature Belgian yeast, for a beer that exudes mocha goodness.

Rich, dark auburn in color with a frothy cappuccino head, Mocha Belgique offers pleasant, fresh roasted coffee and cocoa aromatics with a hint of black currant. Chocolate character up front is enhanced with the fluffy mouthfeel imparted by our distinctive Belgian ale yeast. Black Hand’s well balanced coffee provides a lingering roasty finish.

seven-fifty from the Caboose, Ashland

a: served in a st. bernie chalice, mocha belgique pours a deep chocolate brown in color with a low head that soon disappears

s: aromatic, strong but smooth iced coffee nose with a firm note of semisweet chocolate, medium tones of banana and clove, some underlying malt sugar, nice with a high quality coffee addition

m: carbonation low to nearly nonexistent, medium to medium-full body, smooth

t: follows closely along with the nose, showing a smooth, flavorful coffee addition blended through a firm roasted malt body, touches of sugar, and hints of yeasty esters and spice

o: it's an odd combination, but it works nicely, worthwhile

From 750mL C&C bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 7/9/12

A: Cleanish brown in hue, not too dissimilar from a cup of black joe. A straight pour yields a two finger mocha colored head. The retention is solid. Decent lacing and collar follow.

S: Not what I was expecting, yet it's certainly pleasing to the nostrils. I'm getting a lot more Belgian yeast then anything else here. Hints of milk chocolate covered bananas and saccharin. Not much coffee to speak of in the bouquet.

T: I'm really digging this. It's like a booze filled cafe-au-lait. Coffee, dusty sugar-like sweetener, milky chocolate, green grass. The finish is mature and balanced. Beyond tasty, and something that's a pleasure to return to, sip after sip.

M: Like all of Hardywood's brews, this is a bit more bubbly then I'd like. After having sampled plenty of their beers, I've got to assume this carbonation situation stems from their house/Westmalle yeast. Their Mocha Belgique is medium bodied and fairly creamy. As it warms and I swirl the beer, the overly aggressive carbonation wears off, and it becomes a bit more viscous.

O: Another winner from Hardywood. I had this on tap at SAVOR and wasn't wowed by it. Yet in this specific bottle, I've found one of the most creative American Porters around. Complex, and more then anything delicious. An easy recommendation.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was a half inch of creamy, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Not much lacing.

S: A nice, welcoming aroma coffee, chocolate and malt.

T: Tasted of coffee (not quite as much as I would have thought), chocolate, malt, light hops, and a bit of yeast (presumably this is the Belgique in the name). Not a terrible flavor, but definitely a bit on the thin side.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a smooth, yet somewhat thin finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Certainly not a bad beer, but a bit on the disappointing side. Still worth a shot.

Poured pitch black with deep mahogany and garnet hues around the very edge where the liquid meets the glass. A short lived beige head left but a trace of lace on the glass. The aroma is bursting with coffee! Bold and rich coffee with a slight tinge of tannins is all over the place. Underlying tones of cocoa, molasses, and dark caramel malts. I even gather a bit of light fruits somewhere in the mix. This beer is so complex and delicious. I only wish it was a bit richer in body, but other than that I think it gives Peche Mortel a run for its coffee!

Poured into a nonic pint...

A: Deep dark brown, nearly black. A really nice two finger cream colored head that appears very pillowy and creamy. Excellent lacing with great consistency and uniformity.

S: Roasted coffee, some mild chocolate, and some breadiness. Something in here gives way to a slight vegetal smell as's faint, I believe it is the interplay between the chocolate, coffee, and Belgian yeast. Not bad, but not great.

T: Pretty malt and Belgian yeast heavy with some creamy chocolate, vanilla and brown sugar sweetness, as well as hints of coffee bean. Chocolate and coffee presence aren't very assertive until the finish, which consists of a balanced, creamy mocha flavor. Good, but definitely a Belgian-style porter, with a lot of sweet malt and Belgian yeast presence that gives it a very light quality.

M: Drinks a touch thin. Chocolate and coffee flavors aren't nearly as assertive as I believed they would be. Creaminess, however, is very nicely accomplished, and I truly feel like I am drinking a cafe mocha at Starbucks, albeit one where the coffee is fairly well-hidden. I feel like the Belgian qualities of this beer are taking up too much of the spotlight and the focus falls off the coffee and chocolate, which is where I thought it should be.

O: A solid beer and an aggressive style from a fairly new brewery. Definitely enjoyed it, just thought it came off a bit thin for a porter. The chocolate needs a bit more complexity instead of drinking like a powdered addition. I also think the Belgian yeast hurts more than helps, as it muddles the nose on this one a bit. That being said, this is the beer I thought Boulevard Chocolate Ale should have been. Very glad to have tried it, though not sure it's one I feel the need to revisit.

Thin offwhite head, dark dark brown body.

Nose of slightly tart dark coffee.

Yep, it's Belgian yeast and coffee. Curious. Like a tripel with coffee poured in. Pretty substantial malt character as well. I don't know how to feel about this.

Kinda bright for a coffee beer, not super thick.

Paired okay with some smokey blue cheese. Good, but not outstanding. There was a picture of a barrel on it, but I don't know if it was actually barrel-aged.

Picked up a bottle from Once Upon A Vine in Richmond... I wasn't even aware this brewery existed!

A: Black... not a heavy or thick looking beer like some others of the style, but it's certainly opaque in the glass. The head is a deep brown, but it's quite fizzy and dissipated very quickly.

S + T: Sweet malts and modest chocolate rounded out by some fruity phenols from the Belgian yeast... a bit of a banana-like aroma. Coffee isn't incredibly intense on the nose, but it's there. It comes out in the flavour much more... a sweet chocolate and coffee blend, again topped off with the unique notes from the yeast.

M + D: A little bit creamy, but not the most heavy body. Slick over the back of the throat on the finish... closes up with a nice coffee aftertaste. This is a pretty nicely done brew, and I'd be curious to try others as the brewery grows and develops.

poured from bomber into snifter.

pours a dark brown with thick, quickly dissipating, light tan colored head. decent lacing.

coffee hits the nose with a very faint touch of chocolate. not a big fan of this particular roast... funky brazilian-ness. I was at the blind roast-off where this roaster was chosen and they were my least favorite (out of the 3 roasters this one won by 1 vote and most of us said to blend the 3). solid porter base, sweet with little hop/roast bitterness. very little chocolate. don't think the belgian yeast did it too many favors...

much thinner body than on tap. wildly swinging variation from the various formats. the tap servings are much thicker! what happened to it?

don't get me wrong, it's a good coffee porter but not amongst my favorites, especially from the bottle (this brew would rate a few points higher if rated from draft)

A: A very dark brown as it pours, in the glass it is black with a good amount of rich, dense tan head.

S: Coffee and dark chocolate come out right away with a lot of banana presence. The coffee is earthy and bitter, which I think is accentuated by the roasted malts. The dark malts and the yeast come together to form a chocolate covered banana smell, which I like a lot.

T: Dark coffee and roasted grains hit the lips first, that is followed by dark chocolate and some earthy flavors. The finish is all the yeast, banana, clove, and possibly a hint of dark fruit.

M: Medium in body, the carbonation is fine in size and slightly higher that average for the style, although not quite as effervescent as some Belgian beers. There is a nice smoothness to the texture of it.

O: Overall I really like it, I was afraid that the Belgian yeast strain would blow out the other flavors, but it actually comes out well rounded, and complex. Fine work.

750 ml bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Pitch black with an attractive, creamy one-finger tawny head that dissipates quickly.

S: I'm getting a sweet bready yeasty smell at first. A swirl brings
out more of the roasted coffee, but the coffee is not as strong as I expected it to be. There's also some port wine notes, as well as dark chocolate. All in all a subtle but well balanced aroma.

T: You get the porter taste up front, along with some chocolate, and then the coffee overtakes the other flavors at the end, giving it a dry finish. It's a delicious tasting coffee by the way - roasty, bitter, robust, black.

M: Medium with fairly low carbonation - I would've liked a little bit more carbonation, but it's not bad.

This is a great tasting beer, and was obviously made with great care using high quality ingredients. It's probably ideally suited for pairing with a dessert, with a bottle split between 2-3 people. However, it also works pretty well as just a quaffable porter, albeit a strong and relatively expensive one.

A - Pours almost black, clear, with some lighter brown at the edges. Immense fluffy tan head emerges and retains pretty well. Flecks of lacing cling to the glass.

S - Nice aroma here, medium strength roasted coffee comes through pretty clearley at first. Followed with sweeter cocoa nibs. There is a spicey, banana Belgian yeast profile in there for sure, as well as a finish with grassy hops.

T - Immediately get the Banana and yeasty character from the yeasts, very sweet like cotton candy. Small amount of weak coffee flavors come through, but overpowered by the sweetness. Hints of hops balance as well, but intermittent. Just couldn't get on board with this beer, I've tried several Belgian stouts and it just doesn't click for me.

M - Decent medium body with fizzy carbonation, helps keep it a lighter brew.

O - Just didn't enjoy this one, it has a great aroma but the overwhelming sweetness on the front end and muted coffee and roast killed it for me.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a stem glass around 45/50ish degrees just like the bottle tells you too.

A – Very dark beer, black with just hints of brown colour. The coffee adds a lot of the dark colour I’m sure. A fairly hearty pour gives a lot of dark brown head that fades in a few minutes leaving only a little bit of lacing. The colour and head are perfect for this beer, although I would have liked to see a little more lacing. 4

S – Coffee. This is brewed with coffee from a locally owned Roaster, and it shows. A little bit of alcohol, even though this is only 7.2 ABV, and some malty smells as well. The Coffee smell completely overcomes most of the hop aroma, but there are some earthy/spicy smells there, which might be from the yeast or from hops. 4 -

T – Again, Coffee upfront. You can definitively tell that there is coffee in here, and that taste is forefront. Some spicy taste from the Belgian yeast. A light caramel malt taste with some chocolate. Some bitterness, both from hops and from the coffee. Bitter aftertaste, but I think this may be because of the coffee rather than hops. 4.5 - I don’t see how this could get too much better.

M – Light carbonation, slightly heavy thickness, very smooth when it goes down without much alcohol burn. 4.

O – Another fantastic brew from Hardywood Park Brewery – This place is one day going to be known as one of the best breweries in the US. Check this brew out while supplies last!!!! 4.5

-Belgian Chocolate Porter Brewed With Locally Roasted Coffee-

2012 release straight from the brewery; Poured in a tulip.

A - Nice, two inch creamy, khaki colored head with good retention; Very dark brown in color; Minimal lacing in the glass

S - Really good balance between roasted coffee beans and floral and earthy hops, but the coffee aroma is certainly in the spotlight; Some cocoa nibs in the background and a subtle spice detected from the Belgian yeast

T - Good amount of roasty coffee character hits strongly up front; Some balance provided as the taste continues with cocoa nibs, caramel sweetness, and earthy and slightly spicy hops beginning to come forward; Pleasant coffee and wet, hoppy flavors linger in the aftertaste

M - Nice amount of carbonation; Medium bodied; Carbonation aside, the beer gives a very wet, but smooth sensation in the mouth

O - When I discovered that Hardywood's next Reserve Series beer would be one that featured locally brewed coffee, I couldn't wait to try it. As with their other offerings, this beer does not disappoint at all. I thought the combination of Brazilian coffee blends and Belgian yeast really created a delicious and unique flavor for this porter. On top of that, this beer isn't too light or heavy and is super drinkable. You can be sure that I am getting some more of this while supplies last.
