In the case of the beers released with this name, the "SB" stands for "session beer" referring to ales or lagers of a milder alcohol content (typically lower than 4.0% ABV). The brewers who spent weeks lobbying on behalf of SB 604 with senators and delegates at Virginia's General Assembly plan to release different variations of SB 604 beers that will be session beers only available for consumption on site at their respective breweries.

The "Special Bitter" version of this beer offered by Hardywood is very sessionable, at 3.8% ABV. A moderate caramel malt character and some fruity notes provide plenty of complexity and flavor to this beer, which beautifully complements citrusy, high alpha American aroma hops. Dry-hopped with slightly peppery horizon hops, this beer displays the high degree of balance that has become a signature of Hardywood's beers. A relatively dry finish keeps this beer both refreshing and enticing.

Poured a clear yellow/gold body with decent head and a bitter aroma, although the hops are a little earthy, and not much malt. Beer is light bodied, easy to drink, good hop base, nice finish, good carbonation. Overall, an easy to drink beer that has a touch of sweetness to it. Just not rated higher because there isn't too much going on with this beer.

A: Pours a pale straw color, in the glass it is somewhere between Chardonnay, and golden amber. The body is clear and the head is full, but quickly crumbles into a rocky foam of fish eyes.

S: Some floral notes, Very resinous, slightly earthy, slightly piney, possibly even some cannabis aromas. Pungent to say the least. The aroma is definitely American hops, and they aren’t shying away from it.

T: The first thing that hits is hops. Piney, resinous, and definitely some cannabis flavors in there. Pungent hops break through to a light biscuity bread flavor, but you better enjoy it quick because the earthy bitter finish is coming for you.

M: Mouthfeel is light, with playful carbonation. The finish is slightly oily, but pleasant.

O: Overall a really nice beer. Easy drinking, good hop flavor, and good mouthfeel. My only major criticism would be that the bitterness is a little more assertive than I would like to see in this style. Although that’s just me.
