Brewed with wheat, a touch of rye and a ton (yes, a whopping 2,000 lbs. in a 40-barrel batch) of fresh, ripe strawberries grown by Agriberry at the Chesterfield Berry Farm just 30 miles from the brewery, Hardywood Virginia Strawberry is a fruit beer in all its glory. The color of a southern sunset, with a refreshingly delicate body, Hardywood Virginia Strawberry finishes with a hint of tartness and an irresistibly quenching character that makes it the perfect summertime libation.

Appearance: poured at the brewery with a lacy white head that quickly dissipated. The color was a straw yellow and pretty clear for a wit.

Smell: big strawberry nose with slight Belgian yeast esters

Taste: big upfront juicy strawberry flavor that gives way to a very odd finish that reminds me of band aids. I am not really sure where this flavor comes from, maybe the fresh strawberries?

Mouthfeel: very crisp and dry with a good deal of carbonation. I think this is a good quality for a summertime thirst quencher.

Overall: a very interesting beer. It is good starting point for this unique combination of flavors, but needs some improvement, particularly the band aid aftertaste.

A: pours a hazy orange with a finger of white head that fades into a thin ring with little lacing.

S: loads of strawberries on the nose wih some spicy yeast and phenols.

T: loads of strawberries here with some Belgian yeast followed by medicinal phenols and a somewhat funky finish.

M: light body with medium carbonation, this beer is light and drinkable.

O: a good beer overall. Simplistic and a little too phenolic, but still enjoyable and drinkable.

A: A beautiful orange tan color, slightly hazy, with a lovely amount of white head on top.

S: Some sweet strawberry coming through, but unfortunately there is a metallic, solvent smell that overwhelms everything. From what I can pick out the strawberries smell really fantastic, but the off aroma destroys it.

T: Oh what this beer could be. The first taste has a hint of solvent/plastic, followed by a nice crisp malt flavor, and a rich berry taste.. unfortunately after that there is another hit of solvent. This beer could really be amazing, but unfortunately the off flavors destroy much of the potential it had.

M: Light, crisp and dry. The carbonation is really active.

O: Overall I think this beer had so much potential, but because of the defect just was not up to snuff.

I had this at a Baltimore BA tasting. Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: Pours a clear light amber color with a layer of rather large off white bubbles. The bubbles fade quickly leaving a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Slightly skunky malt right away. My wife said she would be worried if her car smelled like that. Sweet strawberry jam. Not loving the smell, but the berries are nice.

Taste: Not skunky, so I was happy about that. Light and very fruity. Sweet in the finish. This is a very light fruit beer, nice for the summer.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingles of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I thought this was a refreshing beer. The smell was a bit off, but the taste was pretty good.

Thanks again to rudzud for sharing another Hardywood.

It erupts badly... wel not that bad actually, but erupted for sure. pours a light fizzy 1/4 finger head with no lacing, super hazy peach colored.

Nose is pure strawberry! Light yeast funk, a bit yeasty, light band aid and phenols that really get more and more as it goes unfortunately. The strawberry never fades and is great except the plastic goes exponential.

Taste initially hits with strawberry again, fresh fruit and lots of it, but then a quick second later it turns to pure terrible. Cardboard and oxidation at first, then plastic band aid next, and a light dusty dank shelf, it's offensibly terrible, it's like my mouth is having a party and throwing up all the strawberry margaritas in a trash barrel and eating all that together. There is a bitter strawberry tannic flavor too, like they forgot to remove teh fungicide from the strawberries, and a syrupy mess too. Bleh! What could have been a strawberry dream turned into a nightmare real fast.

-Belgian-style White Ale Brewed with Fresh Virginia Strawberries-

From notes on 07/16/12:
Purchased on day of release at brewery - 07/14/12; Poured in a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

A - Less than an inch of white carbonated head that doesn't stick around for too long; Between gold and light copper in color with a pretty clear appearance; No real lacing left behind

S - As soon as the cork was popped, strawberry aroma came to the nose in a pretty big way; Definitely has that real strawberry-like smell - some sweet, but a good dose of tart as well; In addtion, wheat notes show up along with very subtle spice

T - As expected, there's loads of strawberry flavor here - more tart in the taste than the nose with a lesser, but still noticeable amount of sweetness coming through, especially towards the end; Good bit of wheat backs up the strawberry with the same subtle touch of spice; For some sips, I taste an almost sorghum syrup-like flavor that I'm not too fond of, but it's not really overbearing either

M - Above moderate carbonation; Light to medium bodied; Pretty crisp mouthfeel that leaves the mouth fairly dry with a thin, lightly tart film covering the tongue

O - The aroma was easily my favorite aspect of this brew, which was one of the better smelling fruit beers I can remember experiencing. Overall though, this isn't one of my favorites from Hardywood Park, and it doesn't quite reach the bar that has been set by their other high quality offerings. There's no denying that it's a great beer to quench the thirst during the hottest part of the year, and certainly an above average fruit beer, but one 750 ml bottle is almost more than enough for me in one sitting.

Shared at the End of the World party. Poured into a Kate the Great tulip.

A - A gusher if I ever saw one. This beer errupts but what was saved pours a nice hazy golden peach juice hue with a one finger head that left light sticky lacing.

S - Strawberries galore...then..whats this....plastic?! Oh godamnit. Why. Why. Why. Such glory at first followed by such fail.

T - Sigh. I really should just have "sigh" as the only descriptor for the taste. This beer, as I took my first sip, was wonderful initially. bright fresh strawberries and juice and jam and yes!! Then it happens, just as that flavour washes over my tongue it is absolutely decimated by bandaid flavors. This beer is akin to "chasing the dragon"...its like a drug which shall remain nameless in my review. That first sip is sky high euphoria and then each sip afterwards is just awful bandaid and rubber. But you keep taking a sip hoping to get a flash of that first high note...chasing the dragon.

M - Mouthfeel was decent. Would probably have been better if I could have enjoyed it through the taste. Not heavy or syrupy.

O - Overall this had so, so much potential only to fall so hard. Such a shame. Atleast I didn't have to drink a 750mL myself...
