Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
A Belgian wheat beer brewed with a touch of rye and a massive addition (over 1,000 lbs. per 40-barrel batch) of plump, ripe blackberries grown by Agriberry in Hanover County, Hardywood Virginia Blackberry offers an assertive fruit character while remaining extremely refreshing. Ruby hued with the bright aroma of fresh bramble berries, this beer’s pleasantly gentle body leads to a rather dry, rounded fruit finish, making it irresistible on a hot summer day.

Served in a Port City tulip.

A: Poured out about as cloudy as one could possibly imagine. Think muddy water with orange food coloring.

S: I got more Belgium than Raspberry, but that's okay for now. Fresh, wheaty, and subtle.

T: Got more fruit on the taste, but it took a couple of sips before that really heated up. Delicate and not too sweet or dessert-like in any way. Definitely recognizable as a Belgian Wit.

M: Perfectly spritzy, and I found myself appreciating the mouth even more the more I got into the session.

O: Much more understated than I expected for a "Reserve Series," but more than serviceable nonetheless.

Above average and crisp wit that borders on saison flavors. I wish there was more of a blackberry presence. It seemed to be there faintly as the beer warmed. Good beer, but I have had better in the style.

Disappointing, considering the commercial description of "1000 lbs of plump, ripe blackberries". On draft at Capone's, it looks like a standard witbier without any evidence of blackberries in the color and only a hint of berries in the aroma or taste. Frankly, a Blue
moon has substantially more character.

Appearance: reddish orange amber with some wheat haze and thin white head

Aroma: coriander, blackberries and fruitiness, orange citrus, blue curaçao

Taste: very Belgian yeasty with definite blackberry tartness, balanced, white wheaty flavor but with fruitiness that gives it some depth, overall not bursting with flavor but a very smooth and nice fruity, dry, and tart drink

Mouthfeel: medium-low body, a little thin in the mouth, high carbonation

Overall: Nicely balanced with strong tartness and smooth blackberry flavor with wheaty and spiced character from spice additions and belgian yeast phenols. Definitely worth a try

750ml bottle, split, hill farmstead glass

Interesting beer - a pink-rose color, moderately carbonated, light fluffy white head. One patron described tasting "band-aids" - more realistically, I think we all concluded not to buy berries sourced from the virginia commonwealth. Light spiced yeast, sweet berry flavor, wheat - nothing really standing out here, the blackberry could have been integrated so much better.
