Hardywood Park Craft Brewery "Bourbon Sidamo"
$7 / pint on tap @ Lynnhaven Pub, Virginia Beach, VA on 19 June 2017

Notes: Black body beneath a tan head that unfortunately displays limited retention and leaves only spotty lacing (possible dirty bar glass?). The aroma expresses sweet dark chocolate and fresh coffee with just a hint of alcohol but that doesn't carry over into the flavor. The flavor is fuller and quite rich with additional notes of golden and dark caramel, milk chocolate, and an apple-like fruitiness but I don't find much Bourbon or oak at all. Medium bodied with a bristling carbonation. I'm a little lost as I've never had the Sidamo to compare it to, but I'm guessing it's very similar as the Bourbon and oak seem to be very limited. It's not disappointing, but neither is it inspiring.

Pours pitch black with a 3 finger tan head.

Smells of bourbon, vanilla and oak. Milk chocolate more than dark. Coffee, and maybe a hint of blueberry, but I wouldn't have guessed it if I hadn't known.

Taste of sweet milk chocolate/creamy coffee. Blueberry is more evident here.

Feel is rather full. It has a bite, but it's more alcohol than carbonation. Creamy, syrupy, and very retentive.

A great beer! Rich, creamy. flavorful and aromatic. Decadent!

Dark beer with sudsy mocha head. Dark chocolate note. Flavors of Tootsie Roll chocolate, rich vanilla bourbon, powdered chocolate milk mix. Not boozy at all.

In a word, awesome.

Obtained 750ml bottle while on travel from the taproom in Charlottesville, VA. They had it on the counter at room temp. Spent a couple more days at room temp before finding my fridge. Two weeks later, poured into Teku.

Upon drinking this, I told my wife I was going to quit my job and go and drink this beer. She pointed-out that, if I quit my job, I wouldn't be able to afford to buy this beer. Bummer!

Coffee stouts are becoming one of my favorite styles. I had a Founder's coffee stout, which I thought was very good. This beats it, easily. The strong coffee flavor blends well with the alcohol, malt, and barrel aging, to an OMG, this is good point. I wouldn't say it was extremely complex, and I scarcely seemed to notice any wood flavors, but they have made a just wonderful combo of coffee, malt, and alcohol. Letting it warm to 55F really opened-up the flavors.

Obviously, I want more; which is complicated by the rather limited distribution...

God I love finding underrated beers... It seems like in today's day and age, saturated with hipsters and where counter culture has become the norm, its popular to try to be unique or edgy or unnecessarily strange. See, beers like this that just have this... Classic, spot on, perfectly "no nonsense" taste to them... They get under appreciated by the more self aggrandizing masses. Huge tip of my hat to Hardywood on this one, they knocked it out of the park. My first beer of theirs but certainly won't be my last. Out of the 150+ coffee stouts I've had this is top 5ish for me. Top marks guys... Keep up the good work.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a jet black color and a thick texture. There was a small amount of creamy, tan-colored head that lasted an average amount of time. Good lacing.

S: A pretty good, if a bit bracing, aroma of coffee, bourbon, and chocolate. Lots of booze in the nose.

T: Tasted of a little bit of roasted malt, some dark chocolate, a hint of dark fruit (plums?), not a whole lot of coffee, a ton of the advertised bourbon, and a tinge of vanilla. For a beer that advertises itself as a coffee stout, there's shockingly little coffee in the flavor. It's dominated by the bourbon. Still, it's a fairly complex flavor.

F: A well carbonated beer with a boozy finish. Full-bodied.

O: This is a solid beer, if a little uneven. That being said, it's worth a shot.

Pours a jet black color with minimal brown head, dissipates rapidly and leaves almost no trace. Smells of chocolate, molasses, coffee, and malts. Tastes of a lighter chocolate, not quite dark chocolate but almost not quite milk, leans towards milk though. There are some notes of vanilla and coffee, dark fruit, and bourbon. Detectable note of alcohol throughout and the first few sips left a lingering burn, nothing too harsh but certainly more noticeable than other BA stouts. Overall, it's a solid BA stout but I think this is a case where the base beer is significantly better as the barrel really washes out what was a beautiful coffee flavor.

2016 vintage.

pours dark brown. not a big or resilient head by any means. sweet coffee, vanilla, and bourbon tones on the nose. a little slick. drinks really smooth without a lot of heat. good chocolate and coffee notes in the finish with a touch of bourbon sweetness. this is pretty well done, however wouldn't hate for more coffee character here.
