12oz can into a snifter

A: Pours a dark amber with a big white head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing on the glass. A little darker than I usually like my DIPAs but that's not a terribly bad thing.

S: The nose is full of aromatic hops in the form of grass, grapefruit, and pine. Once that settles there is a big candied sugar and malt aroma as well.

T: The taste follows the nose but is more malty than hoppy. I get big waves of slightly burnt caramel along with dark toffee and some pine and citrus as well. Not what I was expecting and it could be these were a bit old...there's no date on the can though.

M: The feel is pretty thick and creamy. Not sure if I like my DIPAs thick or crisp but I lean towards crisper examples of the style.

O: This has to be a bit old as the hops seem to have faded a bit and the malt is really at the forefront. It was a bit too sweet and the hops weren't exactly dominating the flavor. The aromas were great though.

Not bad at all, pours out a nice burnt amber color, clear body and a thick head that slowly transforms into a thin even layer of bubbles creating a nice ring around the glass.
The smell is decent but a little on the light side, mild hops and cirrus fruit and a hint of brown sugar, nothing too impressive.
The taste is pretty good, this is a very sweet IPA in my opinion, but the hops are pretty strong as they hit the middle of your mouth and are quite apparent in the aftertaste. The aftertaste is where this one really comes in for me, I do taste the brown sugar, toffee and a bit of orange zest as well.

This is a medium bodied IPA, smooth and very enjoyable, I wish there was a bit more bite in the hops, but again, this is a fun beer to drink.

Poured from a 12oz can into a Tulip glass. The beer is a reddish amber with 2 fingers of quickly reseeding foam.
Strength of aroma is low. The smell has sweet malt with a light hop aroma. It's unusual to have a DIPA smell so sweet and have such a light hop aroma.
Strength of taste is medium-high. The taste has a lot of sweet malt for a DIPA. Halfway through the hops assert themselves. The alcohol taste at the end is stronger than any other beers I've had in this style. Between being too malty and having too much alcohol in the flavor, it's very out of balance and an inferior beer.
Feel is medium-high in thickness. Carbonation and astringency are medium.
Overall, if an inexpensive DIPA with a high ABV is all you want, then this will do. I had a feeling that the gimmicky advertising was a attempt to hide that this is an inferior product.

First, the ABV is 9.5 not 9.8 as listed. This is my first review here, so I'll keep it simple. Been back in Austin, TX after number of years hiatus in upstate New York. I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised with the growth of Texas beers. It's actually a little daunting, as there are so many to choose from. I was happy to find this in the local HEB. I liked it since it stated German style beer, which is one I prefer next to Belgium style. Went with this since I wanted a nice strong ale similar to Belgium brews, and this one didn't disappoint. It was not a bad price either. BTW, when did beer get so expensive in Austin, TX? I remember almost 8 years ago never having to pay more than $6 or $7 a six pack. That's why I was happy to see this nice quality beer selling for only $8.60 a six pack. Anyways, for the strength, it is still a nice smooth ale, with nice hints of bunch of stuff and not too hoppy. There... how'd I do on my first beer review?

Appearance is inviting with it's darkish tint. Malty smell with the right amount of carbonation. Being is a high APV DSIPA you are waiting for the strong danky hit, but this comes across mild with a sort of caramel sweet flavor. Not hoppy at all. Front end is better than the back end. Will definitely order it again.

Honestly, it's just way to malty imo. Heavy beer, hides abv well. Almost barley fish. Definitely not good for the style. Drinkable, but barely.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance - The beer pours a clear reddish amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head fades rather fast to leave a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell - The aroma of the brew is strongest of a slightly bready smell mixed with some aromas of a caramel sweetness and a bit of tropical fruits. Along with these smells comes a little bit of candied sugar and a touch of pine.
Taste - The taste begins with a rather malty and sweet flavor with tons of caramel sweetness and a very lightly toasted malty taste. Upfront there is a little bit of a bready and herbal hop taste which both grow stronger as the taste advances. All the while some flavors of tropical fruit as well as a little bit of grapefruit, grass, and pine come to the tongue, and leave one with a rather thick and sweet, and moderately hopped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel - The body of the brew is on the thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the big and robust, sweet flavors of the brew the feel is good and makes for a good sipper.
Overall - This is a good brew, but more of a strong ale/barleywine/wheatwine then an IPA in my opinion. Not really hoppy, but nice and malty and flavorful. A nice winter sipper that is robust and big all while giving a warming, yet very approachable taste.
