Karbach Brewing Co.
Texas, United States | website

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
You are in a state of full Hop Delusion, but you knew what you signed up for when you popped this bottle. You knew that it had over 100 IBUs of hop bitterness and that it was dry hopped with insane amounts of Simcoe and Mosaic hops, but you chose to drink it anyway. It's difficult to say if you will ever snap out of it, for you have been smitten with the disorder that many can never overcome.

Tropical fruit aroma is perfect. The color is a deep amber, close to red. Lingering white, fluffy head. Taste is slightly less tropical, but still off the charts. Had from a crowler

Pours a clear and crisp burnt orange with 2 fingers of sticky off white foam. Excellent head retention and some nice sticky lacing.

The aroma is exploding out if my glass. Citrus soaked pine sap with wonderful notes of melon and grapefruit as well. I almost get a sugary caramelized note as well with the caramel malt backbone.

The taste is amazing. Very citrus forward with melon and pineapple as well followed by a hop assault on my palate. The malt takes a back seat making this am absolute citrus hop bomb!

Medium bodied with an appropriate amount of carbonation. This is goin down almost too easy... Great hop dragon finish makes you thirsty for more.

Overall this is the best DIPA to come out of TX hands down. Will gladly put it up against any if the more well known hop bombs out there.

This is one of the best beers I've had from Texas. Probably second to Heavy Machinery. It looks fantastic and the smell is tropical with a hint of pine. Almost smells like a California IPA. Taste is perfectly balanced. Just the right amount of tropical fruits, bitterness, and resin. Probably the least boozy 9%er I've ever had.

Wow this is pretty great. Pretty impressed with the few beers I've had from this brewery. Look and smell weren't out of this world, but the taste is. Pours about average for an IPA and smell is about as expected. Floral scent with a noticeable grapefruit character, and maybe a little mango. Taste is excellent. Strong grapefruit flavor, but definitely not overbearing. Hint of the mosaic hops. Complex character. Strong beer at 9%, but very drinkable and goes down smooth. Excellent, and will buy again

Fantastic DIPA, and IMO easily the best thing Karbach does excluding their fun series brews. Loaded with mosaic hops which is apparent in the nose and taste. I LOVE mosaic hops. Nothing compares to that tropical mango like flavor. They did an excellent job balancing out that super sticky dank hop mess with some sweet malts. If you haven't tried it do it.

Pours an amber color with a very thick foamy head. Head retention and lacing are excellent. Nice fresh, citrus, piney aroma. Hints of malty caramel as well. Great malt to hop transition. Taste biscuits, resin, caramel and slight citrus. Moderately astringent at the end. Medium bodied and low carbonation. Very good beer for sure.

if you're into floral mosaic hops, this is the beer for you! nearly perfect.
poured from a growler filled last night at taps and caps in Lewisville, Tx.

pours a nice copper with foamy ecru head. a little hazy. head dissipates fairly quickly and lacing is not particularly evident. (if the lacing was stronger, I MAY have rated this a "5" overall. I'm into the lacing)
ahhhh...the smell...strong floral hop aroma that it maintains throughout the glass. THIS is nearly perfect.
taste...what you smell is what you taste. hops and hops but not crazy just bitter and overly hopped. despite the ABV, the alcohol is not prevalent. BE CAREFUL unless you want to be dozing as you finish the growler :).
Feel...smooth. no astringency. carbonated but too too much so, at all. just right.
overall...pretty dang good. THIS is what an IPA should be. big, big hops flavor and aroma; ABV with punch; good balance but still leaning towards the bitter side.
I give this the "NO SUCK" guarantee. This may be my current favorite beer.

edit 5/11/16: filled and emptied another growler this weekend...just as satisfying as my first growler upon which I wrote the original review.

This one pours a very elegant umber orange that is bright and cloudy with am umber tinge. The head is extremely think, long-lived and settles very slowly with condensing foam that leaves rich lacing down the glass. The head is light tan to beige in color that darkens as it settles. This is a perfect beer to look at. The cloudiness makes promises of richness in texture and taste, time to stop looking and start drinking...

The nose is sweet malt that is in submission to the hops with notes of grass, citrus, lavender, dark wet dirt, beer (Just checking to see if your paying attention ;-) pine, spring rain. The nose is very complex because many of the notes are very strong and blend. The warmer I let it get the more rich it smells.

The taste is equally complex and dominated by by the hops which are crisp, bitter and has notes of grapefruit, butter, sea weed, and it al floats on a bed of sweet malt that rises in the middle. The initial flavor is a crisp strong hoppiness that is powerfully bitter that falls to the sweet malt that then finishes with a softer more subtle and savory bitterness.

The mouthfeel is rich, coats the palate and releases at just the right time allowing the the drinker to experience the rich earthiness of this Imperial IPA that is one of the most complex and enjoyable beers ever.

Overall this is a superior example of an Imperial IPA with the typical excursiveness you would expect from an American IPA. I would go so far as to label this a Hybrid California/Imperial IPA. The difference being is that they got this one perfect! This is an exceptional beer that distinguishes itself from the majority. I find this one to be a fantastic and unique beer.

Pours a dark copper color with plenty of creamy head. Smells of piney and tropical hops. Distinctively Mosaic. Taste is an explosion of hop flavor, touch of alcohol, and clean crisp bitterness. One of the best Imperial IPA's I've had and certainly the best to come out of Houston.

Holy sh*t. Best Karbach IPA to date. Hopadillo and Weekend Warrior fans will love the transition. Reminds me slightly of LP Yellow Rose but better because I can get it cold, in a can, and with higher ABV.
