Revival Brewing Co.
Rhode Island, United States

Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Cascadian Dark Ale, otherwise know as our Double Black IPA, emerged stylistically from the Pacific North West. It has an IPA backbone with a "special blend" of choice roasted malts combined with a hard hitting matchup of hops, knocking this beer into a new weight class. Dry hopped and unfiltered for maximum flavor and punch. Enjoy it with a trainer!

Treated as an imperial black IPA, this was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a black color with a cap of a little eggshell white foamy head. Some messy lace. The aroma had some coffee, light bitter pine/somewhat sprucy, citrus rind, subtle earthiness, sly wood, dark chocolate and a little bit of grassiness. The flavor was moderately bitter with a touch of the sweet and roast nipping at the back end. Aftertaste was semi-roasty, bitter, hint of sweet. Finish nipped at some roast and pine. The palate was medium bodied with a good grip of the sipping aspect coming about. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, pretty nice imperial black IPA. I’d have this again.

Looks good

Smells like wet hopping, old banana and smoked chocolate

Tastes is quite bitter, burnt alcohol, chocolate is there but takes a backseat to the more pronounced bitter and smoky notes, the more I look the worse it tastes.

Looks good, an intriguing smell, but the taste is way rough with a lingering robutussin talcum powder slickness stuck to my tongue,

A Chinook/Sorachi imperial black IPA is a pretty solid idea, but I haven't had the best luck with Revival Brewing (they've sorta felt inconsistent to me thus far), so I'm hoping this falls on the high-quality side of the spectrum for them.

Pours an expected deep blackened-brown color with a thin but pretty retentive head of khaki-colored foam that leaves nice cobweb-esque lace. Bubble formation on the surface is really solid, too, actually. This definitely looks the part it tried out for, and I like the slightly reddish undertones and cola-like appearance. Solid as hell.

Nose is also very much in the vein of what I expected given the hops involved and the dark malts necessitated by the style profile. Spice, pine, roasty char, slight clove with a nuttiness underneath the roast profile. A bit of anise as well. Slightly medicinal and definitely seems like it's going to be bitter as hell.

Flavor has all of those elements in spades; so far, so good with this one! Huge punch of pushy, piney hops and slight grapefruit, lemon and spice followed by huge roastiness, baker's chocolate, more pine... this also has a surprisingly yeasty and complex finish. I get some of the licorice-like notes from the nose here, too, but they're mostly subsumed by the big malt profile and darker, charred elements. This strikes a nice balance between bitterness and roast/maltiness that a lot of black IPAs kind of fail at to some extent, so I congratulate Revival for nailing that part.

Feel is on the lighter side of medium for an 8% beer, and with that said I also don't get much ethanol. Pretty drinkable though it does coat the palate well, too. I enjoy this well enough to keep coming back for another sip each time the previous one fades, and unlike many other black IPAs I've had, this doesn't really fall too evenly on either the "hoppy porter" or "IPA with roast" side of the spectrum... it has slight elements of both and works well on most levels. It's plenty bitter, has some interesting hop character and looks nice in my glass. Not much else to say other than that I'm happy this met my expectations and I will continue to buy interesting sounding beers by Revival! Always a good outcome to a random single bottle purchase.

Beautiful pour--huge foamy head that lasts with gorgeous lacing. Aroma of coffee and some citrus. A sate of carbon, chocolate and some caramel perhaps as well, but very subtle.

12oz. bottle served in a tulip. Freshness dating was not notched on the bottle. Pours the color and clarity of cola with a dense, half inch, tan-colored head. Head eventually settles into a consistent 1/8th inch cap with copious swaths and spots of lacing present during the tasting. Nose expresses cocoa, piney hops and a suggestion of metallic notes. Taste consistent with nose; however, there's a distinct chalky character and chocolate is more akin to baker's chocolate. Hop character is present but less pronounced and there's also a hint of brewer's licorice. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with an assertive carbonation. Overall, a decent example of the style but I think the bottle might be a little old. I'll definitely need to re-experience fresh.

Bottle from Colonial Spirits
Dark brown with a tan head. Earthy pine and citrus atop a lightly roasty chocolate sweet maltiness. That's a pretty good black ipa right there.

L - Pitch black with a nice two and a half fingers of off-white head

S - Spicy hops with a lot of roasted notes and some fruits.

T - A candy-like fruit taste (think Spree or Skittles) is quite prominent, but the dark malts and roastiness contributes equally.

F - Thicker than anticipated and that's a good thing. Full like a stout, but drinkable thanks to the fruity hops. No alcohol taste ans no syrupy feeling.

O - A stellar Black IPA combining the best of both fruity hops and roasted, stout-like qualities. Damn that's good.

Look - OMG, certainly one of the most gorgeous beers I've ever seen, LOL. Pours like a Guinness and you'd swear it was nitro. Beautiful, big, tan head with staying power. Head dissipates as you drink, but never goes away, and there's lots of lacing. Black as night.

Smell- not a whole lot. Coffee at first. After it warmed, it released lemon and pine scents.

Taste - VERY smoky. Char. Bitter chocolate. Overall, it doesn't seem hoppy at all, though you get a bit of hoppy, kicky bitterness on the finish. I wonder what the IBU is? Honestly, I'm not a big fan of smoky beers and this is a very roasty, smoky beer so take my review with a grain of salt. Still, I've had worse and this is pretty drinkable. It grew on me - as it warms, you taste more sweetness as well as more hop character. It's got a very dry finish that leaves you wanting more. Hides its alcohol very well

Feel - Thin. It's odd - while waiting for the head to settle, it totally looked like a Guinness, but mouthfeel isn't creamy and isn't anything like a nitro.

Overall - I would try it again, but currently it's not really to my taste. I'm not qualified to say whether it's true to style or anything like that. A little too smoky for me. Still, an interesting beer that balances hops and malt well. And one that changes a LOT as it warms. If you can't taste the hops, can't detect the citrus others have mentioned - wait.
