Poured into a Duvel tulip. Flat with minimal carbonation. Smell of molasses, sweet caramel, chocolate / toffee as it warmed. A solid quad but not top-tier.

Pours a nice dark brown with an off white head. Good retention.

Smells malty. Slightly metallic chocolate, yes dark chocolate. Molasses. Dark fruits, booze.

Dark fruits ofcourse and a rather interesting choclatey maltiness that I do not get in other quads like Rochefort 10 or Westvleteren 12. Almost RIS like to me.

All in all less fruity and more dark malty that other quads.

Mouthfeel is rather full, nice and creamy. Good carbonation.

Overall a nice beer really, less fruity than most comparable beers and with a bigger chocolate/coffee/metallic maltiness to it.

Good stuff.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance- The beer pours a deep brownish color with a massive foamy cream colored head. The head has a fantastic level of retention, very slowly fading over time to leave a great showing of a foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is big of a dark fruit nature with raisin, plum, and fig. These dark fruits are mixed with molasses as well as a burnt candied sugar aromas. Along with all these smells comes other aromas of yeast cake, which brings with it some spice of clove and coriander. The alcohol is not hidden in this nose with a nice rum aroma present which when mixed with the rest of the smells gives a rather rich and warming smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a rather rich dark fruit flavor or raisin and plum mixed with the sugary molasses and caramel tastes that were in the nose. There is a rather decent bit of a breadiness that is present right from the start as well, with other flavors of yeast and spice of coriander soon following. The sugary flavors start losing ground as the taste advances however with them being replaced by some more roasty bread and some boozy flavors or a rum like nature. All the while a little bit of a woody taste and some flavors of chocolate develop on the tongue. With the mix of flavors that are left at the end, an almost spiced and roasty fruit cake like flavor is left on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather thin for an 11% abv quad with a carbonation level that was average. A little thicker of a body may have suited the fruitcake like flavors of the brew slightly better and keep it a slightly slower sipper (as it should be an 11%).

Overall – This is a very tasty quad I must say. Other than the somewhat weak feel, it was really a fantastic beer to sip away. While not my favorite quad out there, I say definitely give it a try if you get a chance, as it is very good.

A- pours a cloudy garnet with a thin, light tan head. Lacing is gorgeous.

S- whole grain raisin bread soaked in brandy. That's about as close as I can get. Very boozy and malty.

T- raisin, lots of dried fig, fresh baked bread. Definitely a boozy finish. The fig flavor really shines throughout the whole thing.

M- definitely full bodied with a warming finish. The carbonation is moderate, but gentle.

O- truly delicious.

330 mL bottle, best before date of December 2013.

bubbly, dark brown with beautiful garnet highlights, and monster 3" tall creamy off-white colored head. the head settles down to a 1/2" layer that stays to the bottom of the glass, leaving great lacing. pleasant aroma of raisins and booze.

tastes of brown sugar, a little fruit - figs, raisins. contrary to the smell, no alcohol detected in the taste. body is fairly thin, but smooth, easy to drink.

overall, a great Quad.

I bought this new Quad at Dranken Geers in Gent when i was there two weeks ago. The woman behind the counter advised me to try this one out.

I must say that this is a good quad, not the best there is, Westy 12, Pannepot, Amatus and Rochefort 10 are (much) better but hey, with those beers we talk about worldbest beers.

Poured the beer i my small Wesyvleteren tasting glass. The beer looks absolutely great. A very darkbrown/deepdarkred fluid with a very decent two finger lightbrown head which stays for quit a while. The is lots of carbonation going on in the glass.

The sweet smell of candisugar comes in the nose.

Taste is good but the carbonation is a bit too much in the mouth (and i like carbination!) it feels like a small carbonationexplosion in the mouth.

The alcolhol is well hidden and overall i have to say that this one is a very drinkable quad. I would like to see how this beer is when you age it a few years, it can only get better.

Deep brown with thin caramel head. Smell is brown sugar, caramel and roasted malt. Taste is mildly bitter, with notes of brown sugar and caramel. Sweet boozy finish with a bit of an alcohol burn on the way down and lingering brown sugar. Feel Is surprisingly light, with medium carbonation and a bit of bite.

Poured from a bottle (marked 02-04-2016).

The beer pours an opaque brown with ruby highlights. The persistent two-finger head was a mix of fine and medium-coarse bubbles.

The aroma was of candy and some breadiness. The taste was sweet and roasty with complex overtones. The hops presence is fairly minor, and there are hints ot tobacco and candy. Even though it's a quad, there was no alcohol burn or heat. The aftertaste is a pleasant mix of sweetness balanced with mild bitterness and sourness. The mouthfeel is great -- a nice bite from the combination of the hops and carbonation.

Overall, this is one of my favorites in this style. Everything comes together: the complex flavor profile, the mouthfeel, and the aftertaste. I hope to run into this one again!

Served out of a bottle.

The appearance is spot on what one would expect with a nice frothy and foamy head that took a while to relax.

I'm having it colder than I should but here we go:

Smell is bready with almost an oat characteristic. Very nice lace is forming that clings to the glass like a dress.

The taste is slightly booze oriented for my liking. Lots of carbonation - border line too much for my liking. Champagne esque carbonation that is aggressive throughout giving a tingly mouthfeel.

As it warms the malty characteristics shine through more. Dark plum flavor and smell is developing. Almost like a plum/fig spread on top of a thick slice of multigrain bread.

Not my favorite Belgian quad but a nice break from the rochefort and saint bernardus I so thoroughly enjoy. The lace is truly spectacular on this guy.

Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel pours a clear mahogany color. The head is a billowy two inches in height, and recedes very slowly leaving think, chunky lacing. This is a really good looking beer. The aroma is quite estery with some nice dark spices. Star anise, all spice and cardamom. There are also some plums and dates in the background. It is all a little subdued for the style though. The taste has a little more punch, but is still on the milder side stylistically. It is more balanced between the fruits and the spices which I think is a very good thing. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a chewy texture, and appropriately lively carbonation. Overall, this is a quality Belgian quad that I would happily drink again. I wouldn't call it earth shattering, but it is doing the trick for me as I type this review.
