750 ml cork and cage bottle from the LCBO for $8.40. Great value if it lives up to it's rating here. Served well chilled into a goblet. Best before October 10, 2020. Not likely to be going anywhere, so cracking this in the midst of an ice storm is a good idea.

Appearance - Pours a dark chestnut brown colored beer, initially half a finger of foam was poured but that burned off in no time. Red hues everywhere in the light. Lots of bubbles in the glass and no lacing at all.

Smell - Quite earthy in the glass, not much in the way of malt and a weird astringent metallic aroma. Not loving this so far. Bottle smells of marshmallows, and brown sugar with dark fruit suggestions so there is hope.

Taste - Big time malt bomb. Restrained sweetness. Loads of molasses and toffee, some dark fruits like raisins and plums in the background and brown sugar and marshmallows as well. Some booze as well but the flavors are pretty cohesive. Kind of like Van De Kaizer Blauw, but not quite as polished. Oak and leather come into play as well. Cherries come out as it warms.

Mouthfeel - Soft but very expressive carbonation. Almost like two layers to this with a thin fizzy layer that burns off leaving behind a thick, sticky and chewy feel. Interesting to say the least and works with the flavor profile. Definitely feel the booze burn back there. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall - Certainly a pretty good tasting quad, the nose to me leaves much to be desired, but still a pretty good bargain given the ABV and overall quality. A mildly fizzier near Van De Kaizer Blauw is still a damn good beer.

$8.40 lcbo for a 750 ml. Served at cellar temp into my Chimay chalice. Solid two finger tan coloured head. No alcohol burn for a 11.0% beer. Very smooth drinkig. Great value for a solid Quad.

Not quite up to Abt 12, but still a really good beer. Doesn't quite have the aroma, though still good, a bit of alcohol comes through, and not quite as smooth. Also has just a tad of metallic aftertaste. Still, much better than most beers and quite the punch. Also of note, serious head that almost carries more definition than the beer itself.

A quad that does everything right. Dark brown colour with a good fluffy head of foam. Full nose of chocolate, caramel and dark fruits. There is also some tobacco and leather in here. Taste has the same flavours, with also some oak and earth in the mix. Alcohol is present as well, but mixes wonderfully with the rest. Full-bodied and easy to sip. Lovely.

With one of the coolest labels on a bottle, I was quite looking forward to trying something in my favourite style when I picked this up. St. Bernardus is the leader and this won't replace it for me, but this is still a decent beer.
The worst part here is the metallic taste, which overwhelms the nose as well. But other than that, the sweetness is just tame enough not to be intrusive, the slight watery taste is just slight enough to still leave a body.
You can't go wrong with drinking this, just don't expect top tier.

April 7th, 2015 - Somber in label and in color, the Straffe Hendrik is a darker beer, though the shadowy light of my kitchen doesn't offer much in the way of clinical analysis. But the smell is colorful where the brew is not, exhibiting a bouquet of fruits. I smell fuji apples, some re and slightly squished concord grapes, pear, and an overall impression of freshness. The carbonation supports these flavors well, fluffy and filling. And here the fruit flavors darken a bit, showing more fig than the aroma allowed, but much less sweetness. In fact, the aftertaste gets just a bit dry and toasty, which I rather relish.

Dark brown with a reddish tinge but still with clarity. Poured a nice inch of foam that slowly settled to a thin foam layer. Left sticky foam dots on the tulip glass.

Nose I sweet and earthy with prune fruitiness. Rich and leathery with dark compost.

Dense sweet dark amber candy.up front and prickly tart raisin sweetness that gives way to a mellow earthy funk. Notes of red pear, supple leather, toasted oak, sandy soil. Burnt but not smoky sugars.

Thick sugary body that finishes medium dry. Mildly tart finish cuts through some of the sugars. But the residual sugar builds up.

Delicious quad. There is a lot going on here. I like the finish; it leaves you wanting more even with such a big sweet boozy beer.

Had on tap. Pours opaque, dark brown in color with 1/2 inch lumpy head. taste is dark bread, cherry, currants, and brown sugar. Medium heavy bodied, sweet, with moderate carbonation. Taste is amazing. One of the fruitiest and most complex quads I have had. May be my new favorite in the style.

October 28, 2017 long on the shelf but could not wait anymore of Brewery De Halve Maan the Straffe Hendrik Brugs Quadrupel; Full sweet juicy plums with a touch of dark bitter roast of chestnuts in short the full quadruppel taste just on the edge of guarantee but could have allowed a bit longer to ripen

My first taste of a Belgian Quad was the best beer experience of my life thus far. This will be a style I will be happy to explore further! So, it will be difficult for me to compare this beer to others like it since I've only had two different kinds. The look was a dark brown with excellent head, carbonation and lacing until the very end. Smell was sweet and earthy...very pleasant aroma. The taste was somewhat sweet, fruity and burnt sugar and toasted barley with only a hint of hoppy bitterness. Nice coating in the mouth feel. Lingering pleasant flavors. A fine experience!

It pours very dark brown with frothy tan head. There are nice retention and lacing.
Smell is saying this is a belgian quad! Plum, caramel, toasted bready malt and and spices.
Very complex taste of dark fruits, molasses, wood and peppery phenols.
Sticky texture. Lively on the palate, very well carbonation. Warming and dry finish.
Flawless quadrupel; delicious, intense and warmer.
