Old Chub NITROOld Chub NITRO

Brewed by:
Oskar Blues Grill & Brew
Colorado, United States

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
OLD CHUB NITRO takes you deeper into the rich, malty flavors of the original brobdingnagian Scotch Ale, while the nitrogen widget liberates a cascading, uber-silky smooth oral experience only the CAN provides. This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (6.9% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub Nitro features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee-bit of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.

On tap at Oskar blues. Incredible mouthfeel and much different than regular chub. Recommend.

When you pour this beer (I opted for the straight into the glass nitro pour) you get the cascading Nitro effect with a deep Tan/Brown Colour. Once the thick head rises up, it's a dark Brown Beer with deep Ruby around the edges with a Tan coloured head. On the nose, lots of Caramel, some Woody tones and a little smoke. Great smelling for such a malt forward brew, you can really pick up on the caramalisation. When tasting this beer, there's an initial wave of Caramel, followed by hard Toffee and Fudge. Wood and a light Smokiness carry through the Palate. On the finish there's a little Tea aftertone, which is quite nice. As this beer is Nitro, it's insanely smooth and almost coats your throat. Light carbonation and a Sweet finish.

11/9/2014. 16 oz nitro version can purchased at Chuck’s Greenwood, poured into an ale glass. Pours with a thick, dense, creamy head. Mahogany colored and somewhat cloudy. Aroma is of roasted malt, biscuits, a bit of raisin and fig. Sweet flavor, with a slight amount of bitterness and sourness. Creamy and full bodied, light carbonation and a fairly quick finish. This beer most certainly IS still being brewed, and I hope they continue to do so.

All right! I love the original Old Chub Scotch Ale, so I thought I'd try the newer Old Chub Nitro. Even though it's lost some of it's ABV, it's a really fine can of beer.

It pours dark reddish brown, about the color of a cola. I get a good inch of creamy, cream-colored head. This is the thick, rich head of a nitro-charged beer. Pour it in a beer mug and it looks like the absolute, perfect glass of beer. Looks awesome.

Not much smell can get through the dense head. I detect just a hint of caramel. But what it's missing in bouquet it more than makes up for in taste. The creamy head is delicious, like a milk shake, followed by the bitter sweet taste of Scotch ale. This goes down smooth and satisfying, sweet enough to be easy drinking, with enough bite to make it feel like a real beer.

Overall, this is a fine beer. It goes down easy, and satisfies. One of the best Scotch Ales I've tried. Once again, Oskar Blues puts a premium product in a handy aluminum can.

Served in a thistle glass.

Aroma: pleasant caramel and deep toasty malt notes. Sweet bread character asserts as the beer warms. Clean fermentation character. No hop aroma or alcohol notes. All as it should be.

Appearance: Deep brick red pour. Clarity looks good but hard to tell due to the dense color. Head is thick and batter-like with beautiful tan dense foam stand. Head persists throughout.

Flavor: More caramel and sweet bread notes. There is a background earthy bitterness that helps offset the maltiness. Balance is toward the pleasant malt character. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste lingers with a touch of caramel sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium low carbonation. Slightly creamy due to the nitro. No alcohol heat or astringency.

Overall impression: A pleasant and unique slant on this classic beer. I think the nitro mutes the wonderful character of the normal version of this beer but hard to tell without a side-by-side. Still, this is well done and immensely enjoyable.

16 oz can. Pours light reddish brown with a quick nitro cascade after the can exploded. It has a huge creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is more subdued than regular chub - sweet peaty caramel malts and some dark fruit with some chemical nitro.

The flavor is sweet peaty caramel malts and dark fruits with a nitro twang. The mouthfeel is creamy but watery like most nitro.

Overall, the nitro gimmick dumbs down the old chub. The widget helped the nitro head, but not much of a cascade and made it more subdued and watery.

Usually a stout drinker, but this is a fantastic ale on nitro.
