Old Chub NITROOld Chub NITRO

Brewed by:
Oskar Blues Grill & Brew
Colorado, United States

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
OLD CHUB NITRO takes you deeper into the rich, malty flavors of the original brobdingnagian Scotch Ale, while the nitrogen widget liberates a cascading, uber-silky smooth oral experience only the CAN provides. This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (6.9% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub Nitro features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee-bit of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.

Old Chub is already a fun beer, but on Nitrogen, it just raises the bar. Although I feel there is a little loss on the palate as far as the peaty character, I think the velvety body more than makes up for it. Top notch craft beer in my humble opinion.

A - Pours an almost pitch black. Dark brown and ruby hues can be found on the edges of the glass if held to a light source. Nice thick finger and a half of tan dense and creamy head, leaves solid lacing. \
S - Peat smoke, sweet malts, burnt caramel, tobacco, vanilla and a milky aroma. Very nice.
T - So perfectly balanced. All the Flavors of the aroma are present in the taste, and they're perfectly balanced between sweet, savory and bitter. The nitro really stands out making this beer super creamy like half and half coffee creamer.
O - A perfect scotch ale, the nitro makes it even better. By far the best scotch ale I've tried to date and a must-drink beer for fans of the scotch ale style.
V - Four pack of tall-boy cans. Good value.

Straight "5's" (or a perfect '10') straight across the board and I will tell you why. Sampled last night on 9/20/15. Comes in a 16 ounce can and had their regular 'Old Chub" before in a 12 ounce can. Can chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 20 ounce "Rock Bottom Mugs Club" handled-glass stein.

Brew pours close a pitch-black in color with a good 2-finger beige creamy head that stayed around for most of the drink. Lots of lacing stuck to the sides of the glass when sipped, like a German brew on tap. Aroma is of roasted malts, caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Fantastic! The taste is...wow! Fantastic also! Lots going on with the taste that follows the nose with maybe a hint of chocolate also. So very smooth and went down so easy. No bitter of harsh aftertaste at all and with the high alcohol content, it ddn't taste 'boozy' either. Medium-bodied with perfect carbonation which is on the lower side but works for this great brew. LOVED this one and better than the regular "Old Chub", which is a great brew also!

How do you rate any Nitro beer poorly!?! And it's Oskar Blues?!? It's an excellent beer and the nitro just adds to the awesomeness.
