Old Chub NITROOld Chub NITRO

Brewed by:
Oskar Blues Grill & Brew
Colorado, United States

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
OLD CHUB NITRO takes you deeper into the rich, malty flavors of the original brobdingnagian Scotch Ale, while the nitrogen widget liberates a cascading, uber-silky smooth oral experience only the CAN provides. This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (6.9% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub Nitro features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee-bit of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.

Loved it. I hadn't seen Old Chub on Nitro before so I had to give it a taste. Hopefully Oskar Blues will make this beer available year around in CA because it's delicious!

Mouthfeel- Exactly the type of creamy mouthfeel that you would expect from a Nitro beer

Flavor- Toffee and Caramel

Appearance- Medium to dark brown with creamy head

Finish- Smooth and satisfying

Pours the expected beautiful nitro fashion. A nice fizz is heard when you pop this from a can as the widget gets going. Head retention is of course epic; lacing is thick and slowly slides down the glass.

Brew itself is extremely dark, purplish brown, with a bit of light shining through in the thinnest parts of the glass. Head is dark tan.

Nuts, figs, and prunes dominate the aroma, with some caramel and toffee from the grains. It takes a lot more to draw aroma from this on nitro, but it smells delicious; slightly sharp with grapes and cherries.

Dark fruit and bread abound in the flavor; very distinct and strong, much more significant than in the aroma. Raisins, prunes, and plums; walnuts and pecans; red grapes; dark bread. Thick and delicious.

Incredibly smooth mouthfeel, but perhaps even more impressive is how incredibly smooth the entire brew goes down: silky smooth, with no sting, no hint of ABV, no foaming. It's probably the thickest brew that I feel you could still chug.

It's meant to be enjoyed slowly, but in big sips.

This is a fantastic beer, and I feel the nitro format vastly improves upon the regular Old Chub.

16oz. can served in a tulip nonic. Pour is beautiful and cascading - cola-colored in hue and opaque in clarity with a tight, creamy, one-inch, cafe-au-lait colored head. Head eventually settles into a consistent, quarter-inch cap. A few residual spots of lacing are revealed during the tasting. Nose very much subdued but there's a hint of something vinous mixed in with a trace of cocoa and an earthy/roasty malt profile. Taste consistent with nose with perhaps a suggestion of lactose and a trace of something metallic. Mouthfeel of this beer is wonderful; light-medium in body with a creamy/silky texture. Overall, the mouthfeel on this beer is outstanding, but I have to say that I prefer the standard over the nitro - the nose and flavors all come off a bit dull and underwhelming.
