Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
OLD CHUB NITRO takes you deeper into the rich, malty flavors of the original brobdingnagian Scotch Ale, while the nitrogen widget liberates a cascading, uber-silky smooth oral experience only the CAN provides. This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (6.9% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub Nitro features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee-bit of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.

Poured into pint glass. Thick, nitro head. Not much on the nose. Nice sweet flavor. Very smooth. Incredible feel and lacing.

12oz pint served at the Griffon Pub in Niagara Falls, USA.

Appearance - dark Amber topped with a finger and a bit of decadent off white head brilliant retention and lacing.

Smell - scotch in subtle hints but loads of toffee and caramel and vanilla. Slightly earthy but the sweet Malts dominate.

Taste - like the nose with a more astringent and bitter taste. Scotch and toffee makes for a very nice combo. Caramel and vanilla play a nice backing duo.

Mouthfeel - super smooth from the nitro. Otherwise hefty but smooth body and carbonation is just right.

Overall - sensational beer that is worth trying and lived up to my expectations. Never has scotch ale been so easy to drink.

Draught pour into shaker pint at Davis Beer Shoppe. Had some gas delivery problems at the start of the pour, so I should revisit. I've had this beer several times over the years, but alays from a can. Was shocked I hadn't entered it into BA. Nose was mute, but the one thing that really stood out that I hadn't noticed before was the sweetness. Not TIPA malty mess, but way more than I remember from cans. Puzzled, will revisit.

I had this on draught in a pub. It was served in a pint glass. It pours a rich, dark cola color with a thick, creamy, tan, nitro infused head. It's a really pretty pour. The smell was somewhat subdued, but it featured malt, peat, and some caramel. The tastes include lots of roasted malt, burnt, earthy peat, nuts, caramel, and brown sugar. This has to be one of the creamiest beers I've ever drank. It is full-bodied, creamy, and smooth. Overall, it is a really fun beer to drink. I think I like the flavor of the regular Old Chub better but the feel of the nitro version is amazing.

Holy smokes, this one is the creamiest of the lot. I'm having this in a 4oz sampler on a flight.

Creamy head, unusually dark body compared to the original with copper highlights. Head is guinness-like and totally tight.

Not much on aroma except for some walnut, malts, honey, scotch.

Total deliciousness here. Lots of malty goodness like the original, with a rich honey-scotch layer. Notes of chocolate, plum, and torched banana peels come out.

Feel is nothing short of awesome. Super creamy, super delectable.

Overall, the NITRO is a win-win. I'll have it again and even prefer it over the original!

On tap at Flying Saucer downtown Nashville.

Nitro pour - solid 1 finger head. Very nice lacing. Has a pleasing dark red tint.

Sweet, full-bodied, nice malty flavor. Very drinkable but not what I have come to expect from the Scotch ale style. Maybe more of a dark Irish red.
