It's always peculiar when a normal range stout crawls out of a bourbon barrel. We have become so accustomed to bourbon barrel-aged beers being of imperial status and carrying the weight, malt sweetness and complexity to support the barrel and in comparison a normal weight stout seems light, but the barrel shines very well with less competition in which to contend.
The Ridgemont barrel-aged Velvet Elvis pours the expected espresso-dark, mocha whipped appearance with ample lace and quick retention. Aromas of fresh-ground coffee, campfire, cocoa powder and spicy bourbon greet the nose while as ashy-sweet flavor is short on malt sweetness but wonderfully burnt with brown sugar and marshmallow.
Its lighter and drier middle palate highlights the beer's earthy underpinnings: cocoa, burnt toast, french-press coffee and peps of smoldering embers. As the bourbon character builds in, the caramels, vanillans and sweet oak character keeps the beer supported after the malty body falls out from beneath.
Medium-full in body, the beer's finish is spicy with bourbon heat and slightly peppery and tannic from its roast-derived astringency. Still, the beer is much more drinkable than a beer at this level of complexity should be.

Aroma is toasted and chocolatey, with a hint of coffee and vanilla dominance. Lightly roasty.
Flavor is slightly sweet, accented by the bourbon vanilla character, then roasty and lightly bitter. Bourbon lingers in the aftertaste. Roast is more subtle than some. Chocolate weaves throughout. No harsh or acrid character, which I appreciate.
