Ah, the brewers dilemma- their love affair with both barrel aging and dry hopping diametrically oppose each other. Each one cancelling out the greater attributes of the other, but then balance is achieved where hops and barrel are both present, just not in the intensity that either one deserves. But at last, a beer like this emerges...
The bourbon-barrel aged, dry hopped version of Deviant Dale's pour with a dark amber, nearly maroon color and a frothy sand-stained whipped head to cap the beer. The scent conjures toasted pecan, burnt caramel, toast, citrus and pine while the initial sip is dripping in caramelized malt, light toffee and candied pecan.
Though sweet enough to compare to American barleywine, the beer strives for drier and more bitter aspirations as the creamy substrate of malt drops the bulk of caramel in favor of citrus and spruce. Orange, grapefruit and lemon verbena grow from a floral upstart and finish with a deeply resinous, almost sticky, flavor and feel.
Spicy, dry and very woodsy, the full flavored beer shows its boozy tendencies with palate numbing and throat warming effects. Its bitter finish is laced with pine sap, cut grass and citrus ribs. Still, a malty-dry character entices the palate even with much of its dry-hopped character lost in the barrel.

Aroma is deeply toasted and bourbon dominant, with caramel, toffee, and vanilla dominating. Hops are overwhelmed by the bourbon character.
Flavor reveals similar bourbon dominance. Notes of cinnamon emerge, adding complexity. Not at ask what I expected. There's a pleasant toasted malt backbone, and a hint of grapefruit and nectarines emerge, but they're hidden below the bourbon. Wonder how long this spent in the barrel. Dry hop character is totally lost. Still, I like bourbon.
