Coffee dominates, of course. Thanks Kevin L.

With each and every special release, the complexities keep piling on and the depth of flavor gets deeper and deeper. With the HotBox coffee roasters on their team, the Oskar Blues folks apply a generous coffee addition of coffee to the famed impeiral stout and then allow it to slumber in those coveted bourbon barrels. The beer that emerges is surprisingly drinkable and notwithstanding of the variety of favors that beg exploration.

Bourbon Barrel "Java" Ten Fidy pours with a paler than usual dark brown, a shade off of the onyx black depth that's expected. Its lighter profile continues as its scent is deep with coffee and roast but not quite the espresso perfume with which is accustomed. As its honeycomb froth folds back into the stout, nutty, cocoa and toasty aromas bleed into a seared sweet taste of molasses, toast and bittersweet chocolate.

As its malt sweetness begins to relax, the caramels lift and the coffee intensifies. Bold french press varieties offer a soiled, earthy and rootish quality that edges toward turkish blends. Tethers of dark fruit lurk behind with black cherry, licorice spice and plum. A rummy spice lingers into the bourbon barrel nuance of nuttiness, oakiness, vanillans, caramels and coconut.

Hints of kaluha trail long and warm as the full bodied stout celebrates a roasty, toasty and robust finish. A long aftertaste of nutty coffee blends take an edge off of the stouts acrid roast but provides that softer soil and pecan character. Warm and spicy with whisky and oak, the waning moments of taste simmers with smooth bourbon. The Java version of Ten Fidy is a welcome taste but likely not any improvement over the original.

Acquired from Beersempty so a big Thank You goes out to him. Poured from a 19.2oz can into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short dark brown head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains coffee, bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of coffee, bourbon and chocolate. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is very mild as expected but complementary and brings a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down dangerously easy, not too filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, this is a very solid big stout to drink for a long time.

Pours a light black / brown color with a tan fresh head. Delicious roasted coffee smells with chocolate and bourbon. Mouth feel has a very nice roast mellow coffee taste infused nicely with bourbon, then a nice milk chocolate roasted malt finish. easily the best variant on the 10-fidy, with a sweet and mellow mouth feel , great brew.

Not sure how this gets such high ratings.

On tap. Tan head black color.

Burnt coffee. Char. Roast. Burnt rubber. Ash. There is absolutely nothing good about this beer. Alcohol phenols. I can’t drink a 5 oz pour.

I couldn't wait for a full quick chill in the freezer so I cracked it at just a little warmer than cellar temp. Pours a deep black with a thick fluffy head. Just tons of coffee, vanilla, chocolate and char on the nose.

Holy heat! It's a hot, boozy coffee bomb. A good amount of bourbon, wood, marshmallows too. Chocolate, roast, cinnamon spice. Coffee makes BA Ten Fidy that much more special.

It's a tad thin but that's just nitpicking. So enjoyable.

Draught pour at Davis Beer Shoppe into mini goblet. WOW, everything I loved about BA Ten Fidy but with coffee. Definitely a birthday present for me, loved it! Only way it could've been better is if I walked out with a stovepipe of it!

Got this from vanlingleipa a while back. Cheers!

From a large can into a snifter
Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with Hotbox roasted coffee added

APPEARANCE: Pours out clear black and yields a 3 finger, medium looking, creamier tan head with great retention. Pitch black body with lower levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full cap and leaves lots of good lacing on the glass.

SMELL: Roasted and burnt coffee beans, some vanilla and cream notes, oak, wood and bourbon barrel on the nose. Hints of milk chocolate as well. Bold and boozy.

TASTE: Roasted coffee beans, burnt notes, vanilla, cream and oak up front. Definite bourbon and booze at the swallow, leading into a bold and lingering finish of roasted and burnt, bitter coffee beans, milk chocolate, sweet cream, oak, bourbon barrel and some alcohol. Lots of booze lingers.

PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbonation. Creamy and a touch foamy on the palate, a touch lighter for the style, goes down fine with a decent burn and finishes somewhat sticky. Lots of heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is better than the original bourbon Ten Fiddy. The coffee addition seems to have added a layer that diminishes the overly boozy and woody barrel. The head is also better here. That said, I’d still take the base Ten Fiddy over this. Thanks again for the brews, vanlingleipa!

From tasting notes 03/23/17
Had on-tap at Final Gravity in Roseville, CA

Appearance - Served in a tiny 6oz snifter that makes me feel like my hands are the size of Andre the Giant's. Pure black with a tan, broken layer of surface suds. Intricate pattern of spotting makes up the lacing on this tiny glass.

Smell - Mocha aroma with some syrupy chocolate, caramel and some assuredly bourbon booze character.

Taste - More coffee than chocolate as the nose suggested. Roast first, followed by strong caramel and chocolate undertones. Bourbon oak, vanilla and some heat come through mid-taste, but finishes with a nice balance of all flavors before a chocolate syrup sweetness lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with low carbonation. Silky smoothness that quickly turns dry and sticky in the finish. A bit too sticky for my preference.

Overall - Another great variant of Ten Fidy, but i think i like the regular BA Ten Fidy more. Unusually sweet for a java variant, but damn tasty all the same.

19.2 oz. can. Pours inky black. Medium khaki head. Smells of mostly coffee. Bourbon. Chocolate. Tastes of all of the aforementioned flavors. Heavy coffee. Heavily roasted coffee, too. Bourbon and oak. Strong, bitter chocolate. Lingering bourbon and oak finish. Heavy. A little boozy. Excellent.
