The traveling taste that is the Vienna lager has taken its origins from the savory and malty character of central Europe down to immigrating Mexico with a crisper, drier, more simplistic character and is the reimagined at Colorado's Oskar Blues brewery. And now the taste that's synonymous with Mexican amber lager seems right at home in the Rockies.

Deep goldenrod and with the light amber saturation of honey, the beer crowns with a loosely knit froth, casting forth its toasted grain character of bread crust, nutty, toasty scent with a scant floral hop veil. Its taste brings home the nutty sweet savoriness along with a toasted cereal undercurrent.

Much of the same transpires over the course of the middle palate. With the charming chestnut flavors dissolving, the cereal sweetness remains in all its freshly toasted glory. Lightly bitter in finish, the beer's herbal and peppery hops balance the majority of sweetness while allowing the beer to remain malt-forward.

Finishing herbal, minty and spicy, the lager dries to a crisp and nutty taste that's remiss of peanut skins, leaf and pepper with a short, starchy-sweet aftertaste that leaves the palate wanting a more complete barley portrayal.

12 oz can with freshness dating info on the bottom

Pours a nice warm shade of darker amber, fine lace 1/2 way up the glass.

Nutty and malty nose.

More of the same on the palate, malt, maple, again nuts.

Enjoyable style, great with food, great in warm weather

More decent beer in a can

Had on tap. Pours clear, orange-brown in color with 1/2 inch head. Taste is smooth grains and toasted malt. Not the most complex beer, but very tasty. I would get this one again.

Mahogany brown in color with excellent clarity. There's a half inch of frothy beige on top. Light lacing. The aroma is of caramel and light malt. I taste caramel and faint German buttering hops. The mouth is light, smooth, and crisp.

L: brilliant amber brown liquid topped by a 1/2" cream colored foam collar

S: rich grains with a hint of bread crumb, nuts and light toast and a faint spicy noble hop scent.

T: Its all malt, light toast, mildly sweet, some nuts, light toast and subtle malt flavors finishing up with a pleasant, balancing tea flavored bitter accent emerging mid-palate.

F: The body is medium, the carbonation average and the beer is crisp and refreshing.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber orange with a lot of bubbles. Big three finger off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A bready and fairy sweet malt forward aroma with a scent of grains, biscuit, and caramel. Malt hints of grains, biscuit, cracker, caramel, toffee, nuts, and slight chocolate with some yeast. Sweet hints of honey. Also some hints of noble hops. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a crisp, bready, and sweet malt driven taste with notes of grains, biscuit, and caramel. Toasted malt notes of grains, biscuit, cracker, caramel, toffee, nuts, and chocolate along with some lager yeast. Some honey sweetness. Subtle noble hop presence. A nice crisp taste.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, creamy, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice session lager. Nice bready malt flavor.

12 oz can with a canning date on the bottom of August 2015; purchased at the Brevard NC brewpub.

The clear light amber body comes with even more visible carbonation than usual. The white head is durable and leaves ample lacing.

I believe this is supposed to be a rather "light" beer for cyclists but even so the body is overly thin and the malt aspect of the flavor profile is a bit weak for this style. It does have the crisp lively feel expected but the citrusy hops rather than the malts dominate from start to finish.

O: Setting aside the departures from style, this beer is clean and refreshing.

Didn’t hate this. Nice amber color, crisp and light with a good malt backbone. More substance than a lot of Mexican lagers, nice change of pace. Not too much residual lace, thin with a high carb level and smooth finish.
