the rum edition is so much more dramatic and delicious than the whiskey one was, i really like what the sweet rum contributes, the wood is more robust, the liquor makes a bigger impact too, and with the tropical nature of all the coconut in here, there is a thematic congruence that i really like as well! its thick and shiny dark brown from the tall can, with a gorgeous aroma of fresh toasted coconut, almond, chocolate, and spice like anise and allspice, some booze and some cocoa too. the flavor incorporates all of this, but the coconut really stands out, especially towards the finish, mostly natural but a little sun tan lotion vibe too, sweet for sure, accented nicely by the rum, which i can really taste, and mellowed by the wood. the malt never get too dark here, less roast and bitter than i remember in the base beer, and i kind of miss it, as this gets too sweet for much volume drinking, at least for me, and a bitter thread in here would help it, but i like the forward chocolate in here, and the vanilla notes from the rum barrels too. alcohol only really comes out at the end, and its a lot with the sweetness and all the body, but as dessert type stouts go, this is pretty special! my critique is the can though, not sure it makes sense to cellar a canned beer, but this beer seems like it would mature nicely over time, i just dont trust cans for that purpose. other than that apparent design flaw, this is next level stuff if you dig the big flavored dark ones.

Appearance - Pours dark chestnut with light tan head that settles to a thin cap. Few spots of lacing around the glass.

Aroma - Big rum aroma, coconut, chocolate, light spice little caramel.

Taste - The rum and coconut are really balanced, little bit of bakers chocolate coming through, the rum cuts the usual mounds bar flavor while it is still there the rum really adds a little depth to the flavors.

Feel - Nice feel, great carbonation slightly slick the rum adds some nice heat with a touch of dryness on the end.

Overall - Well done addition to the regular DBC, really tasty and easy drinking.

Appearance: Pours an opaque fudge color with a one inch tan head that retains well before turning into a ringlet; a few strands of lacing

Smell: The rum is strong, here, along with milk chocolate, caramel and coconut

Taste: Roasty, up front, with chocolate and caramel tones building; the rum barrel arrives, through the middle and persists into the finish, with the coconut becoming more prominent, after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Enjoyed this beer as it does a good job with two difficult adjuncts - coconut and rum barrel treatment

Coconut and rum are usually the stuff of the Caribbean, but with a lush porter as its soul, the strong and dark ale of Oskar Blues take on a decidedly Colorado tone.

The rum barrel aged version of Death By Coconut carries a masculine garnet brown austere, faintly hazed and capped with a quite but confident creme-like froth. Decadence exudes as the sweet and sultry scent of dark sugars mingle with chocolate, a spiced rum tingle and an overall fragrance of sun tanning oil. Those dark sugars are woven together with the savory sweetness of molasses, brown sugar and toffee to much the delight of the initial palate.

As the middle palate is awash with the bold sweetness of the porter, its dark coffee, cocoa, pecan, and molasses flavors swirl in intoxicating fashion. Coconut glides across the tastebuds bringing its nuances of vanilla, cream and an overall nougat and malted milk candy character. Light on bitterness, a hint of marzipan, nutty and coffee flavors come with a malty sweet finish.

Rich, full and unapologetically decadent, the beer finish and trails into a long and sweet finish that it begins with. This continuation means that the ale is simple and dedicated to its flavors but lacking in the complexity and development department. The spice of rum, nutmeg and cinnamon surround the coconut into a long and savory afterglow.

On tap 8oz pour. Pours a dark brown /black with a fresh dark tan head. Smell i s mellow rum with fresh coconut it mixes with malted sugars. Taste is superb delicious barrelled rum with fresh coconut, notes of chocolate and some caramel a little dark fruit just fantastic. Silky mouth feel with mellowed rum and coconut. This porter/hybrid was stellar the barrel rum was the star mixed with the coconut, i could sip this all day staring at some Caribbean waters, very impressed with this brew.

On tap. 2016 version. Light tan head. Black color.

Porter body. Big rum flavor. Has a charred flavor. Chocolate and very faint coconut. Maybe it has faded. Something feels a little off here as it has a slight burnt rubber flavor. It’s okay.

Light fizzy head, pitch black beer, light lacing

Nose loads of fake coconut, and tons of rum, like parrot bay rum, little cocoa

Taste big rum like tons of spiced rum and coconut rum, little cocoa, thin malt, big rummy alcohol,
Mouth is thinner watery, boozy, decent carb

Overall eh, liked it at first but then it's not great

I’ve drunk the crap out of this is cans & on tap, so I suppose I should review it. This 19.2 oz. can/dildo should carry me through the Vikings win & right to bed. And no, I’m not bringing the can with.

This beer has the most persistent head I’ve ever seen: after a half hour it hasn’t budged. The liquid is dark with plenty of red foil. The nose is a bubbling cauldron of rum with a side of rich malts that leans towards molasses. Very nice.

Death by Coconut – Rum Barrel Aged warms all the parts of my insides. The rum is strong, & brings plenty of, well, rum, spices, & a quick shot of alcoholism. It’s blended with exquisite beauty with the coconut, leaving this almost perfectly tropical. Lending unnecessary nuance & grace is soft chocolate, lactose, with a finishing boom of sweetness, with the rum adding to an already candy-sweet beer. Rich & oh-so-pluggable.

I – almost – happily paid $1/oz for this on tap in D.C. & - almost – happily shelled out plenty for the cans as well. Why? Because it’s a magnificent, world-class beer that I want to slug as often as possible. And this is my last can. I hope it comes back!

I am reviewing the Rum Barrel DbyC served in July 2017.

Dark black with a full smooth body and light carbonation. Only a thin bubbly mocha ring.
Excellent mix and balance in the nose. The flavour however has a tad too much rum and the coconut is largely masked. Still, a nice mix of ingredients.

The smell of rum, coconut and chocolate mix nicely in the nose, also vanilla.

Taste is chocolate, coconut, nice bright rum and vanilla. About equally bitter and sweet lingering rum and wood dominated aftertaste.
