BA21 Vol. 5BA21 Vol. 5
Notes: BA21 Volume 5 is next up in our series of gigantic barrel-aged beers with premium added ingredients. For this installment, our brewers worked alongside Corvus Coffee Roasters in Denver to hand select a custom coffee blend featuring three distinct roasts to supercharge this bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout. To enhance the bourbon and vanilla notes we found in the coffee blend, we went all-in adding vanilla beans. The result is quite possible the most well-rounded barrel-aged imperial stout we have ever made with toasty oak, roasty coffee and smooth vanilla.

Growler into pint glass. Pours an inky black with a brief tan head. Initial impression is coffee, dark chocolate, and charred oak. Mouthfeel is slick and viscous. Alcohol is well hidden. Finish is smooth, fading to a slight coffee bitterness. Overall, it's not one of the most memorable Imperial Stouts, but it's very good.

5 oz mini-snifter pour at Lures Bar & Grille. Pours pitch black with a long-lasting tan head. Aroma and flavor feature deep roasty malt, black coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon. Smooth, viscous, and full-bodied mouthfeel. Hides the 13.3% abv very well. Overall it's a complex, well-rounded brew.

Pours a deep dark brown black with a thumb sized brown head from an aggressive pour , only light lace left behind.

Aroma is roasted malts loads of coffee, chocolate and vanilla dominate with sweet molasses and light bourbon notes mingling underneath. Smells smooth , sweet perfectly blended goodness.

Taste is nice rich smooth roasted malts with loads of coffee, vanilla and chocolate mingled together. Nice sweet extra sugars floating around caramel almost molasses like the barrel aging is mellow light bourbon and oak notesunderneath it all just to add hints to the roasted goodness.

Mouthfeel is nice rich big and almost chewy smooth carbonation rounds it out.

Overall an enjoyable beer, Oskar Blues has a soft spot in my heart for big stouts as ten fidy is almost always in my beer fridge.

This is fine, good even. Coffee is almost completely gone at this point, 8 months in, modest barrel character (I would have liked more), vanilla more subtle but coming through on the finish, particularly as the beer warms a bit. Medium body. It’s well made just kind of forgettable, which is a little disappointing after the Bamburana and even that wacky ginger stout.

Canned 2021/1/21
Pours a giant frothy foamy 2 finger brown head with medium retention, messy lacing, just about jet black color, decent legs

Nose rich roasty dark malts, roasted coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, burnt sugar and burnt marshmallow, nougat, fair coffee in general, a bit of earthy vanilla, some toasted oak as well, little perfumey alcohol

Taste brings loads of dark chocolate, fudgey cocoa, roasted malt and coffee, roasted coffee, again that burnt sugar and burnt marshmallow fudge, nougat, fair sweetness but not overly, some baking spice with a hint of cinnamon, baker's chocolate, into vanilla spice and earthy vanilla, a little toasted oak and general barrel notes, vanilla barrel even, just a touch of bourbon vanilla ice cream, a little bitterness on the finish

Mouth is fuller bod, rich chewy creamy, med frothy carb, light warming alcohol

Overall pretty good, nothing too special but not bad either

I expected a little more nuance from this brew, but there is nothing subtle about it. This is more like bourbon with a little bit of beer flavoring than the other way around. The very strong bourbon influence makes the taste sickeningly sweet. Count me disappointed.

Very nice beer. Great Vanilla & Java nose and the taste follows. Perhaps a bit too much carbonation on the tongue...especially for a big beer. Overall would buy again; especially for the price as I think this 4-pack was less than $15.

This wasn't bad but I've had a few to think this isn't that great. The coffee and vanilla is super background, im most reminded of night warden by Avery which i like a lot more. Anyways better than what I anticipated but this still gets dunked on by other breweries

Pours dark black. Aroma is dominated by the bourbon, vanilla, chocolate & coffee. The taste is incredibly complex. Begins with the sweetness of the bourbon and vanilla and finishes with the chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium to thick. Incredible stout.

12oz can purchased off the shelf as a 4-pack from a local beverage store. Canned on 1/21/21, so this is 4 1/2 months old.

Look: Pours out a very dark brown/black cola-ish thick appearance and looks practically opaque. A very thin brown colored head remains, with a bit of lacing.

Smell: Umami flavors up front and definitely getting a lot of oak and bourbon barrel notes - boozy, dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, sweet vanilla. Smells pretty good. It's still a bit cold so it may open up more as it warms. Secondary notes of amaretto, caramel, french vanilla iced coffee, chocolate rugelach + coffee breakfast.

Taste: This is a bit sweet up front, but it has a nice balance on the finish. Very complex and tasty actually. Up front, I get a lot of sweetness from the vanilla and bourbon - the initial perception is that it's a bit boozy but it's so smooth. The finish is mildly bitter and acidic with dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, more vanilla sweetness, and smoke. Interesting cigar tobacoo notes lingering on the palate long after the beer has left my mouth. I find it interesting that the coffee and vanilla flavors are not super strong, which may be a good thing, as the complex 10-month bourbon barrel-aged flavors really come to the forefront. After aging in bourbon barrels, they added coffee beans and vanilla. I think that the bourbon and vanilla flavors work together, and the coffee works more with the roasted malt and chocolatey stout notes.

Feel: The mouthfeel is very nice - has a good thickness and chewiness to it. Carbonation is decent.

Overall: This is a very good bourbon barrel-aged stout. The alcohol is barely detectable, and for 13.3% it is pretty insane. I would say that for me, this is almost on par with Lagunitas Willetized Coffee Stout. It's been years since I had Ten Fidy; I am curious to see how they would match up. My main critique with this beer is that it's a bit too sticky sweet for me; it's a nice treat every once in a while.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small fluffy head, and not much lacing.

This smells like vanilla, oak, tobacco, roasted malt, and lots of coffee.

I don't get a ton of barrel out of this one, but the coffee and vanilla is done quite well nonetheless. The coffee doesn't add too much sweetness, allowing the vanilla to add some very pleasant sweetness. I do get some oak, and it plays well with the roast here. I just don't get any bourbon.

This is thick, creamy, and with no booziness really at all. It's really drinkable for this style, and just goes down super smoothly.

BA 1050 is one of the most underrated barrel aged stouts out there, and this is a nice little variant on that.
