Gubna was bred from Oskar Blues Brewery’s hankering to confront 100+ IBUs by cranking up the complexity of hops by pouring Cascade on top of copious amounts of Summit, then balancing that with a backbone of German Dark Munich Malt and Rye Malt. GUBNA’s post-fermentation dry-hopping with both hops allows this monstrosity to gently coax the citrus rind and grapefruit aroma while providing a rye malt-induced, spicy-yet-round middle, and a brisk, clean bitter finish (10 percent ABV, 100+ IBUs).

12 oz. can, tulip
A – Light amber, high clarity. About ¾-inch of very light tan head, foamy and long-lasting.
S – A ton of grapefruit, woody resin, and pineapple. Low toasty malt. Hops are quite pronounced, but some sweetness lingers behind on the nose.
T – Grapefruit and pineapple juice are huge here, just a touch of that resin note. Mild, sweet bread crust providing a backing for the hops. I’m sure there’s a lot of bitterness but it’s subdued, considering the hop character involved.
M – Medium to medium-full in body, with moderate carbonation. There is definite sweetness but it’s balanced well with the hop bitterness, allowing hop flavor to be the star. Only somewhat dry, with moderate, increased bitterness on the finish.
O – I’m so glad to be drinking this fresh to get its best self. Incredible hop flavor, bright and refreshing, with solid malt backing. Hides the alcohol well. At 10% this shouldn’t be a crusher, but it sure drinks like one.

Amber color with a decent head and lace.
Aroma of floral hops, malts, stinky hops and hints of fruit.
Taste was sweet, mild bitterness, malts and an odd taste I could not really describe to you.
Medium body and carbonation.

355 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.0%. Orange colour, moderate off-white head. Lovely aroma of piney hops, smells like a pine forest, also some fruity notes (oranges). The flavour is a massive attack of fruity and piney American hops, fairly light bodied and dry for its strength.

Wonderful aroma, thick clumpy lacing. Taste is oranges and other citrus, a hint of cough syrup sweetness, with a smidge of alcohol warmth. Be careful, this one will sneak up on you.
