On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours an almost opaque deep copper color with a cream-colored head leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth caramel malts with equal amounts of pine, citrus, and herbal hops. Also present are moderate amounts of sweet dark grapes with hints of berries and brandy.

Tastes very similar to how it smells, though not quite as complex. Slightly dry caramel malts up front are joined quickly by nuanced vinous flavors - dark grapes as in the aroma but with larger hints of sweet liqueur. Midway through the vinous notes fade a bit with the addition of pine and slight herbal hops that fade out into a moderately ending. Mouthfeel is very good, with grainy carbonation.

Overall this is another great treatment of one of my favorite beers. The aging certainly reduced the hops but the qualities of the barrel more than made up for it. A must try if you see it around.

On-tap at the Brick Store Pub for their 14th anniversary celebration, $6 for a 12 oz pour. I was a little unsure of how a Port treatment would work for a double IPA, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. A very nice beer indeed. The pour is nice- slightly hazy orange with a nice head and good, dense lacing down the glass. Very nice aromas as well. You really get the fruity, vinous notes of the port itself, as well as a hint of its brandy component. After that comes a whiff of piney hops and firm malt. Interesting combination that works- the fruitiness of the wine and the spiciness of the hops blend nicely. The taste as well is fruit forward, followed by the hops. Nice port flavors of dark fruit, some spice, and vinous notes, then bitter citrus and pine, and a long bitter finish intertwined with brambly fruit. Really pleasant. Very smooth in the mouth, and without a barrel bite from the wood. You get some very fine tannins that add a bit of structure, but no noticeable oak. A very integrated beer, with nice, long, seamless transitions between flavors, and a nice lingering finish. At the very end you almost get a taste of stone fruit, especially as the beer opens up and continues to evolve in the glass. A good example of how wine barrels can be used effectively with beer.

Canned staff release (now renamed to Port Barrel Aged G'Knight), via trade

Medium-red color with a miniscule head. Butter caramel aromas, with light cherry and orange notes. Lots of port character comes through in the taste, although much lighter and less sweet than actual port, of course. Honestly, this is a strange combination with the hops. Low-ish carbonation. Ultimately, I found this beer pretty strange and not a treatment I'd recommend others mimic.
