Nitro-tap at World of Beer Raleigh

A - black with reddish hue; cascading, thick, soft, creamy, brownish head that has great retention

S - roasted malts, some caramel, faint burnt sugar

T - roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, bitter finish

M - medium bodied though thin at times, creamy

This was a nice beer especially with the nitro. It was easily drinkable and had decent flavor. It was a bit light and thin, but much of that is probably from the nitro-tap. I would definitely never turn this beer down, but I do prefer the Smidy #2 version better.

SHMIDDY! According to the man pouring this brew, it was made using the second runnings of Ten Fidy. Served in a shaker pint

Dead black and lightless as midnight, though mahogany highlights manage to poke through. One finger of creamy, blanket-like head the color of cocoa powder leaves behind thick, fuzzy walls.

Yeasty nose. Toasted sourdough, burnt coffee, some dark chocolate. A little light.

I wouldn't believe this was related to Ten Fidy if I didn't know it to be true. The flavor begins with burnt biscuits and a mild, sweet caramel note. The swallow delivers the roast: espresso, burnt bread, bitter dark chocolate. Finishes dry and clean.

Moderate, prickly carb in a fairly expansive and smooth medium body. Alcohol doesn’t even seem to be there. Dry, crisp, drinkable.

Shmiddy hints at its pedigree, but is miles away in flavor. Ten Fidy is big, sweet and all about in-your-face flavor. This is roasty, dry, and all about subtlety. Which is nice every now and then.
