16oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a good-sized, light brown head of foam. It left sticky rings of lace on the glass. It smelled of black licorice, coffee, chocolate, toffee and resinous notes. Strong licorice, coffee and dark chocolate taste with a piney bitter bite.

On tap at Bittercreek. Pours muddy black with very thin head, normal roast grain and hop aromas. Grains take over a bit in the taste, providing that stout/porter essence, until some hops kick in on the finish.

Not your typical IPA. Dark, frothy and reminds me of a dark lager. However, the mild hops mixed with a heavily toasted malt is unique and not bad. The mouth feel of this is what wins, and the hops are not as forward as you would expect. This should be in its own category. Overall I like this, but could not do too many, not as crisp and refreshing as your typical IPA but still good. I would certainly have this again if they only sold them in cans or bottles.

ive said it before and i will say it again, oskar blues needs to start releasing these beers in cans if they want to stay relevant in the craft game amongst the geeks. this beer is so good, but aside from a few draft handles, it will never see the light of day. a real shame. i enjoyed one on tap at ernies, and im glad i did. its one of the frothiest yet driest examples of the style going right now, big mocha head on it, great lace, and an eggshell luster. it seriously smells like bakers chocolate in the grain, a hint of coffee, and then the hops, which are piney and bitter, but absolutely not overdosed. the hops are all in the finish, allowing a long grain based flavor profile to set in. the bitter cocoa is there for sure, and it hints at the piney bitterness to follow. its soft feeling, delicate almost, and the abv is remarkably low for both the brewer and the style. a session beer by their standards. ultra dry in feel, i think thats the beers best feature, so uncommon in these beers, i really like what it does, letting the hops finish clean and bright, even in such a dark beer. very well designed, different from the style norms, and one of the better beers i have had from these guys is a really long time. if this were on shelves i would buy it for certain.
