Shipwreck Porter
Barrel Aged Porter
ABV: 10% | IBU: 26 | SRM: 42

When our friends and neighbors at Brinley shipped us ten of the barrels used to make their Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum from their distillery on St. Kitts, we were given the opportunity to create a beer that would take advantage of wood rather than the other way around. We looked to coax complexity out of the marriage of a barrel's soul and a brew's potential, not just to bomb a huge beer with huge flavor. The rum that lives in these barrels for four years integrates its spice to the wood so well that it ends up reminiscent of a Bananas Foster. A sturdy brown honey porter seemed the best host to receive the ghosts from Shipwreck's old home. We started with a base of deep malts looking for notes of coffee and chocolate, then enhanced them with the floral bouquet of local wildflower honey and the preservative strength of 10% ABV while keeping the body sensible. This was put in the casks to meld with the vanilla, wood, and spice notes, toned down by the oxidative effect of a year in the cellar. Drink Shipwreck Porter because a barrel should be so much more than a depth charge.

What an awesome porter - lots of molasses in the black body, accented with pineapple and booze! Medium-bodied and smooth, incredibly drinkable despite the sweetness and abv - a real winner... On tap at The Good Life in Massapequa...

In a 4-beer carton sampler at Blend.

LOOK: dark black, small white head, typical porter.
AROMA: Coffee; roasted malt.
TASTE: Coffee leaves it a little bitter and astringent. Otherwise, pretty tasty porter.

Porter tasting with DC.

Sealed growler from the brewery to tulip glass.

Liking this a little more this time.

Taste is coffee and vanilla; vanilla is very sweet. Tastier than before. Still get an odd aftertaste, baking soda or soap.

Capped and waxed growler purchased 11/26/16 at brewery and poured into Kane tulip glass.

L: Very dark with a tiny bit of see-through dark brown in top mm. 2F light tan head, not much retention, leaves thin ring and a little bit of lacing here and there.

S: Rum and rum barrel are fairly prominent, roasted malts and vanilla.

T: Pretty much follows nose. The rum and barrel really take charge, but the malts and honey come in to mitigate and balance out the taste. Some vanilla and cocoa on close.

F: Medium body, light to medium carbonation. Balance pretty good, but unlike a stout, this actually seems to lose a bit of complexity as it warms (or the rum overasserts itself).

O: It's pretty good, but maybe experiments at 6 and 9 months in the barrel might be useful, because it really wants to take over the more the beer warms, and at 10% you can't exactly crush it, nor do you want to as the initial display of flavor is quite good.

I luv porters and enjoy most offerings from Carton but this one missed the mark to me. Nothing bad going on here but nothing that would make me seek it out again.

I had this on draught at a bar. It was served in a tulip glass. It pours a color between dark mahogany and jet black ,with one finger of foamy, mocha-colored head and lacing. The lacing lasted though the entire pour. It smells of roasted malt, rich coffee, and dark chocolate with whiffs of vanilla and rum. It's a delightful aroma. The taste is rich and pleasing with dark coffee, cocoa, and a subtle touch of rum. It finishes with a slight smoky bitterness. For a porter, it has a nice, creamy, full body with moderate carbonation. You can feel the 10% ABV but there isn't much of a burn. Overall, this is an outstanding American Porter. It would pare well with a fine meal or as a dessert beer. Another outstanding Carton offering!

Poured from a 32 oz wax topped growler. Pours a very dark brown that settles in the glass near-black, with a thick, frothy light brown head. Aroma is big and roasty with tons of barrel on the nose and a hint of liquor-like sweetness. Flavor is big on roast, vanilla, honey and hints of wood. Noticeable rum presence on the finish, but not as boozy as you might think. Feel is full, medium carbonation, rich, but velvety at the same time. A really nice beer all around, with huge flavor and big complexity. Differentiates itself nicely from the slew of BA beers out there.

A: Pours a kraken black with dark mocha head.

S: Chocolate and coffee initially. Wood char, vanilla, oak, gritty grain battle with traditional aroma apart from scenes associated with barreling. My only complaint is after i let this beer sit for about 30 min it's almost all spiced rum booze and the playfulness goes away.

M: Lurking wateriness, but made fuller with rush of carbonation. Stays creamy with am espresso graininess on the edges.

T: Great notes of chocolate, raw cocoa, andcoffee. Fruit flavor doused in rum. Guava like with elements of banana and pears topped with shaved chocolate. Burnt molasses. Spiciness from rum barrel reminiscent of ginger root and oak. Overall, a good marriage between the spicy-sweet character of rum and bittersweet malt base.

Smooth rum, vanilla, coffee, chocolate on the nose. Pillowy soft mouthfeel. I mean perfection here. Low carbonation and round. The flavor is phenomenal. You've got Porter, barleywine and nutty brown ale components. Cask wood forward, smooth rum that is never boozy, dark malts
of coffee and chocolate with a roasted/slightly smokey finish in the flavor. Let this beer warm up and you'll see just how complex it is all while being subtle and highly drinkable. Probably my favorite offering from Carton.

On tap at Torst. A decent porter, perhaps smoother by the rum which did not overwhelm the character. Drinkable stuff but do not see what all the fuss is.

Absolutely awesome beer. This one had tons of coffee and dark chocolate on the nose and the flavor was very well balanced. Nice big creamy mouthfeel with roasty malts despite the fact that this was a porter.

From a 32 ounce, waxed growler into an oversized tulip.

Produces a lot of dark khaki head over a brown/black body that settles pitch-black. Plenty of scattered lace. 5

Cocoa and coconut and rum. Smells awesome. 4.25

First flavor is coffee and cream, quite the surprise. Dark fruit appears with vanilla. Great taste but get nothing barrel or spirit-wise. Okay, there's a little lingering rum. 4.25

Lighter in body, but creamy, roasty, and a little bit of booziness. Drinks easily and leaves a lingering sticky, wet feel more like liquor but without the heat. 4.25

This is a great beer with some real depth. The patient drinker will be rewarded by letting this warm.

Large growler, sample from the brewery.

Exceptional looking brown head leaves a lot of lacing, pitch black hue. Big molasses-like nose with wood and booze and bitter dark chocolate in the nose. Deep smoothness with in the big creamy body, sweet to start but balanced all around. Semi-thick wood character, leveling booziness, and lots of dark sugars. Unsweetened chocolate, faint coffee, and some black currant action in the middle. Long barrel aged finish with roasted grain and a mild boozy sweetness.

Nothing short of mind blowing with this brew. Barrel qualities are near perfection as is the balance. A real treat.

Awesome and unique creation here by Carton. Pours near pitch black with a nice two finger head with fantastic retention. The nose is packed with spiced rum, but also has a chocolate component. The first sip instantly let's you know this beer is way more than just a rum barrel aged porter. The base beer is pretty complex. You get an instant warmth from the rum and alcohol content, followed by a honey light sweetness that sticks around throughout, with barrel tannins coming in, and a slight bit of chocolate and coffe, which finally brings up a perfect amount of roast which lasts into the finish. My only complaint is that the mouth feel is a bit thin, but not a major issue.

Pouts deep brown with frothy tan head. Rum is apparent on the nose with roasty caramel , vanilla, and toast behind it. Taste has lots of roasted flavors again, alcohol is apparent without being boozy (I'm told much less so than last year). Some brown sugar and maybe pumpernickel on the finish. Mouthfeel is full without being heavy, dangerously drinkable for a 10% beer. Overall this was a surprisingly great beer. the barrel flavors are apparent but don't overpower what appears to be a roasty complex porter.

Aging porter in spiced rum barrels is right up there with stouts aged in bourbon barrels: they make a great pair. The rum flavor is distinct and sweet, and balances well in this beer.

Absolutely exquisite Imperial Stout. I had this on tap at Free Bridge Wine & Spirits in Phillipsburg and am providing the couple of notes I took when tasting this there. Aroma had some nice chocolate malt and coffee bean elements as well as caramels and a hint of banana. Flavor-wise, I picked up more of a 'molasses' aspect of the rum rather than boozy rum. Syrup and brown bread in the finish. Nice and smooth - another winner form NJ's Carton!

Enjoyed several times of the past few years.
13 & 14 Ship Wreck were fantastic beers, so much so that when the 15 was released I went to Carton to get a few growlers and glass on draft.
Something changed in the brew or the Rum Barrel aging for the 15 vintage, it lost the mouth feel, aroma and taste which all made this BA Porter one of my favorites in the past.

My rating is for the 14 Ship Wreck and unfortunately I didn't record the tasting notes.

Look: Pours a nice black color with a good fluffy light brown head that leaves good lacing

Smell: Molasses, rum, roasted malts, caramel, vanilla, oak

Taste: Rum is the predominant flavor. Caramel, vanilla, oak, roasted malts, and molasses are also in there

Feel: Medium to full body, medium carbonation, very smooth

Overall: Lots of flavor and character, but the rum is so strong, I feel the rum is the star here rather than the porter. But still, overall it is very good. Very easy drinking so be careful with it. I like what Carton is doing, showing that they are capable of more than just hoppy beers

I got this along with Regular Cofee in a trade. Expectations were kind of low, but I have to say this beer certainly held its own with the RC. Fantastic rich porter, incredibly drinkable at 10%. I get the rum barrels a bit, but not in the overly boozy way that many porters struggle to balance. Would definitely want this bad boy again, really really well done Carton.

Poured from a 32 oz growler that was capped and sealed with Orange wax at the brewery
Appearance: Deep Dark Mahogany brown beer with a fluffy cocoa head. It dissipates to a slight ring that sits on top of the beer and leaves good lacing.
Aroma: Rum, molasses and brown sugar. The nose reminds me of a dark spiced rum.
Taste: Rum is at the forefront, followed by dark chocolate, vanilla , molasses, burnt sugar. You can taste the 10%. The underlying beer tastes like a barleywine.
Mouthfeel" Very smooth sipper It is sweet, but not too sweet, chocolaty Very smooth but offset by a slight alcohol burn. The rum subsides and leavves the cocoa, vanilla, burnt sugar flavors in your mouth.
Overall: This is a great beer from a brewery that never fails to impress me. This beer reminds me of something that DFH would do (and I mean that in a good way) The perfect accompaniment to this cold evening.

Pitch black with a brown head that fades and doesn't really lace the glass much. Nice rum barrel character in the aroma with coffee, chocolate and burnt malt character from the porter base. What I really enjoy here is how well the rum barrel character plays with the porter. Underneath it all you can tell the porter is truly the hero. Big porter characteristic pops on the flavor with coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, burnt caramel and toffee which melds perfectly with the rum barrel and wood flavors. Mouthfeel is heavy medium and very creamy. This is fantastic drinking and all the flavors are there but compliment one another. I'm looking forward to seeing this one again!

From 11/27/14 notes. Enjoyed a 32 oz. growler of this on Thanksgiving, 24 hours after getting it from the brewery capped and waxed.

Pours a deep mahogany brown color with one inch of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Roasted malts, dark chocoate, burnt malts, toasted malts, milk chocolate, and chalk. Medium body and low carb, pretty smooth body. Very nice.

Overall I thought this was pretty of their better beers I've had. I wish it had more milk chocolate than dark chocolate, but the mouthfeel is great and it doesn't feel 10% ABV. Worth checking out and would like to have again.

Growler shared at the Plan Bee Savage release.

Pours a fairly dark brown, almost black, with a half inch head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like rum and all its involved spices, cinnamon mainly, with some chocolate, and roasted malt.

Though the rum is definitely a prominent flavor here, at no point does it overwhelm anything. It's integrated well with honey, chocolate, coffee, and cinnamon flavors. The porter is quite sweet, but stops short of being cloying.

This is medium bodied, not quite as thick as I would've wanted, but still sufficient enough. It's creamy, with some spice graininess in the mouthfeel. It's very drinkable.

I continue to be impressed by Augie Carton's brews. I need to visit soon.

At the brewer, new release, 10-18-14, into a tulip named Carton. Benchmarked vs Founders Porter and TenFidy - 2 of my faves in this dark realm.

A- Syrupy from the honey, ship stain brown-black, scads of lace, looks as good as TenFidy.

S- Roast malt, milk chocolate, Kahlua, spices and sweet rum. Nicely integrated. Dessert like, last beer of the night.

F- Follows the smell nicely, with more sweet rum barrel and honey on the tongue coupled with long, smooth roast malt softened by Kahlua, milk chocolate, espresso, with a dash of spice. Complex. Up there with TedFidy, sweeter.

M- Full body, silky, smooth, like an after dinner drink, it's boozy.

O- I really need to place this side-by-side with TENFidy and Founders Porter to fairly compare. But Carton seems to bring a bit more of the rum barrel, wood, and honey to the experience.
