Aged 1 year in Brinley Rum barrels.

Shipwreck Porter
Barrel Aged Porter
ABV: 10% | IBU: 26 | SRM: 42

When our friends and neighbors at Brinley shipped us ten of the barrels used to make their Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum from their distillery on St. Kitts, we were given the opportunity to create a beer that would take advantage of wood rather than the other way around. We looked to coax complexity out of the marriage of a barrel's soul and a brew's potential, not just to bomb a huge beer with huge flavor. The rum that lives in these barrels for four years integrates its spice to the wood so well that it ends up reminiscent of a Bananas Foster. A sturdy brown honey porter seemed the best host to receive the ghosts from Shipwreck's old home. We started with a base of deep malts looking for notes of coffee and chocolate, then enhanced them with the floral bouquet of local wildflower honey and the preservative strength of 10% ABV while keeping the body sensible. This was put in the casks to meld with the vanilla, wood, and spice notes, toned down by the oxidative effect of a year in the cellar. Drink Shipwreck Porter because a barrel should be so much more than a depth charge.

Good head production and retention. Attractive brew.

Intensely roasty aroma. The rum is certainly there if you know to look for it, but it's not overpowering, and blends with the malt base quite well. It's an aroma that develops and smells better with each sniff. Toast, prune, oak, coconut, coffee, char.

Surprisingly thin flavor profile, really lacking the depth of rich maltiness I expected. It's a very tasty beer, just not what I was expecting given the nose; it's much more subtle and balanced than most in the style. Nicely bitter and roasty; low sweetness. Tasting notes of coffee, oak, bread, raisin, prune, pepper, bitter chocolate. Short semi-dry finish but with longer lasting bitterness and char on the aftertaste.

From 2014... BA beer has come a long way since then... unfortunately this one has not evolved...

Pours dark and virtually impervious to light. Small, dark foamy head that dissipates quickly. Great initial aroma of cocoa, mocha, coffee, and rum. While not overly thick, the beer coats the tongue and nuances of chocolate, vanilla, rum appear. A nice sweetness pervades the beer, with undercurrents of coffee lingering long after you swallow. It is truly a shame this beer has such limited distribution.

What an awesome porter - lots of molasses in the black body, accented with pineapple and booze! Medium-bodied and smooth, incredibly drinkable despite the sweetness and abv - a real winner... On tap at The Good Life in Massapequa...
