Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
You can play boundary-pushing flavor games all you like but you should never turn your back on fundamentals. HopPun is born of playing with the most straightforward of beers- the hoppy American Pale. We push around experimental hops 06300 and HBC342 with Super Galena and Mosaic, soften the edges with a traditional pale malt bill and then tie it all together with the fruity esters of British yeast. Look for the tutti-frutti/berry side of modern hop aromatics in a pleasant drinking straightforward Pale. Drink HopPun and keep the chops sharp.

16oz tallboy, sample from the brewery.

Webby trail of lacing down the glass. Slightly hazed pale copper hue. Big piney citrusy hop nose with some mild toasted grain and fruity yeast. Hop forward but very balanced, ample hop bitterness with a juicy malty middle. Medium body, a bit chewy. Crisp and smooth. Pungent with fresh grass, pine bark, & citrus pith. Hoppy is correct, there are some IPAs that don't even come close to this level of flavor. Great drinking, another winner from Carton.

Pours a golden-amber color with a huge, fluffy white head that left lots of lacing. Smells of malts, hints of orange and pepper. Taste starts with bready malts, orange, orange rind and notes of pepper, however it quickly becomes dry and quite bitter. Well carbonated, medium to heavy bodied for the style.

Definitely a rock solid Pale Ale in a more old school style than a lot of the low bitterness, fruit forward, hazy pales that are popping up everywhere. Great hop/malt balance, full flavor, and easy drinking. Hops are mostly earthy with hints of berries and other faint fruitiness. Tasty beer. yb

I've enjoyed this 3x at the Brewery. In dress beta in late July, on 8/1/14 cold draft *thank you Brian!, and on 8/2/14 on cask, thank you Kelsie! Wow!

Augie Carton said he would wait to experiment with his talented team before brewing Carton's own APA, and wait until their anniversary they did. The team has nailed a national best beer. You must try it.

As the brewer wrote: "We push around experimental hops 06300 and HBC342 with Super Galena and Mosaic, soften the edges with a traditional pale malt bill and then tie it all together with the fruity esters of British yeast." and recorded: http://youtu.be/y6103CkLeYk

My go-to beers are hoppy APAs (e.g. Dales, Stone, Sierra Nevada).
A: Darker than expected, a brooding apricot, dense looking, with ample retention and lacing.
S: A big nose packed full of complex berry, grass, hay, summer, and piney hops. Nuanced and wine-like.
The blueberry is easy to pick out.
T: Amply hoppy but well balanced, and this regard it maybe beats an IPA. Wine like long finish. Plenty of malt and sweet yeast make this almost a Euro-influenced beer. Complex like a Belgian.
MF: light to med bodied, fresh, and a long finish in the good way carton knows how to do it.

Overall. An APA ready for national stage.

Pours slightly hazy, orange in color with one inch head. Taste is pale malt, toffee, and light orange rind. Medium bodied, bitter, with moderate carbonation. Makes for an above average, tasty pale. Well worth a shot.

Date: July 18, 2015... Glassware: nondescript pint... Occasion: celebrating promotion/job hiring for Shan and I with Rich and Mary... Being brief--as this is a dinner date of sorts--I will say that this is as fruity and engaging as an American Pale can be, with all sorts of berry (raspberry and cherry) teaming with the more standard citric injection to bless the tongue and teeth... balance is key here as well, with more than enough malt foundation to allow the simmering hops explosion take root... the pint drained so quickly, I almost ignored the beer menu and ordered a second instead...

Another fine beer from my friend Eric in NJ!
A - Pours a mostly clear golden orange with 2 fingers of white head that settle to a nice cap with very little lacing.
S - Not an aroma bomb but piney and subdued citrus.
T - Flavor is a little citrus, some pine, malt and just a little bitterness on the finish.
M - Medium mouth feel and carbonation.
O - This is a good, drinkable Pale.

Pours bright orange-brown with solid head and some lacing. Smell is muted mix of malts and hops, leaning more toward earth and tea notes. bitterness becomes more pronounced as t warms and I keep drinking. Taste is similar but more pronounced with a hint of metallic. A hint of metallic taste in there but not enough to be a dealbreaker. Not quite worth the rating it's gotten IMO, but then again it's not bad and the more English end of pale ales typically aren't my thing. Not bad though.
