Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Are there any aromatics more corruptly appealing than that suspect waft of dirt and sex that is the heart of fresh white truffles? Not the fake pretty perfumes ubiquitous these days, but the approach/avoidance primitive reaction to that heady scent of something that was secretly thriving just below fecund soil on early morning moments in late fall. Gilded Lily looks to take the beauty of a classic Belgian tripel a step further by stitching a little bit of white truffle’s leather to the edges of the beer’s luxurious drape--the pull of a touch of kink peeking from a lovely silk robe. Drink Gilded Lily because a little hint of dirty makes it all the more alluring.

12oz can, sample from the brewery.

Semi-hazed pale golden hue, decent lacing. Very Belgian-like in the nose with very earthy of truffles and dried apple and pear aromas. Phenols are present, enough character to stay well within the Tripel realm. Very warming, lots of malt on the palate. Semi-dry with truffle and phenols dancing on the tastebuds. One of the most interesting beers that has stayed to style. Each sip grows on me.

I think we can safely say carton has achieved gourmet beer here. I never would have guessed that the earthy funk of truffles belonged on the flavors of an orange bundt cake but there you go. It's genius.

At $26 for a pack of 4 12 ounce cans, time to see if it's worth the truffle.

Hey, where are you all going?

Poured from a can purchased 12/26 into a Belgian ale glass.

L: Pours easily, small white soapy head with little retention, no doubt due to high ABV. Leaves a little ring. Color is a cloudy amber with lots of carbonation bubbles.

S: Fruit and malt on the nose, some sweetness, a tiny bit of earthiness. A little bit of alcohol.

T: Fruity up front, both tropical and citrus. Definitely catch the sweetness of the honey, but the high ABV cuts that nicely. Light malts. Only the faintest earthy whiff of truffle, which is good because a little goes a long way.

F: Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, very well-balanced. Truffle could have been a disaster and they made it work.

O: This is good stuff. Unusual and pretty expensive for a 12 oz can, but good.

Truffle added some nice flavors to the beer. Looked and felt great, but I just couldn't get over the intense nail polish nose and taste on this one. Solid beer, but a bit off to me. Can't understand the extremely high marks this one gets.

A bit messy, the truffle was odd and somewhat sour. Overly sweet.

The smell is pleasant and interesting, white truffles and a relatively muted tripel base. The taste is somewhat off putting, as the truffles add an odd vegetal note
