Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Super Galena hops early in the boil bring a strawberry touch. Russian imperial stouts have a dark chocolate presence with vanilla nuance; quite pleasing when accented by a bold hop addition. Our walk around this space had us skirting the territory of those three tone blocks of supermarket ice cream. All we needed was an ingredient you can ferment that would push those notions without running over the beer-ness of the flavors. We turned to that classic museum snack, freeze-dried Neapolitan ice cream. Drink Cosmonaut because exploration is what it’s all about.

Overall - Creativity in a Russian Imperial Stout that's correctly balanced to handle the addition of sweet with hop bitters and power.

This ice cream flavored, spiced, and inspired Neopolitan does not disappoint. It starts on a bitter RIS core, and adds astronaut ice cream to bring it back to - well, a strong sweet stout - out of this world.

Creative craft at its best. Why? Because it never becomes artificial, bathroom scented and remains a drinkable, balanced, meditation stout.

A) 2 finger light tan head with good retention, lots of lacing rings. Blackish, dark brown.

S: it's coffee, roasted malts, a bit of hop spice, Summer fireman's fair or an ancient boardwalk.

T) Follows smell with roasted malts, more coffee. Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate Ice Cream. Rounds out with bitterness and alcohol on the final orbit.

F: Medium-bodied, light carbonation, creamy (which is required in this case!) The bitterness and ABV gives it a saving dry finish.

12 oz. can. Black body. Smells a little fruity. Chocolate. Smells of barley and grain, too. Tastes fruity as well. Milk chocolate. Alcohol. Vanilla. Creamy. Heavy and alcoholic. Boozy and creamy bodied. It’s pretty good, but not my thing. Also, it tastes better than it smells, which is not a usual criticism of a beer.

Served on draft into 14 ounce goblet.

Black with a creamy brown head

Nose aroma is roasted malts, chocolate and yes, strawberries. If you've ever smelled a fresh gallon of ice cream from the supermarket it has a certain scent to it, and this stout has same sort of fermented lactose and artificial strawberries smell.

Taste is really solid. This is a Carton product after all and I have never disliked any of their beers. With that said, this stout tastes like bargain brand supermarket ice cream, roasty malts, chocolate candy and strawberries. I'm not the biggest fan of strawberry in a stout, or galena hops for that matter. I don't think they belong in a stout, but somehow the brewmasters at Carton were able to make this work, so it's an interesting combination.

Mouthfeel is really nice, slightly boozy, with excellent head retention and coloring.
