Style: Berliner Weissbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 3.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
While standing on Mount Mitchill, scanning our favorite local beaches, you can find paddles of the indigenous prickly pear cactus underfoot. Once you learn how to peel them (being carful of the less obvious finer thorns), there is a pleasing spring legume sweetness to be found. With Dune Fruit we add the meat of prickly pear paddles to a simply soured wheat beer to draw out their subtle vegetable sweetness and cut their viscidity with some acid. A delicate balance of vegetal and brightness in the form of an unassuming sour. Drink Dune Fruit because it’s the top of the summer and it’s time to shift that palate back to the sand.

16oz tallboy can, sample from the brewery.

Great clarity in a pale golden yellow hue, lacing stays for the duration. Mildly tart nose with dry cracker-like maltiness. Perfect level of tartness, lingers on the palate for a good while. Not completely familiar with the dune fruit but there is some other elements to this brew other than being a small yet crisp sour ale. Suggestions of lime pith and snow peas in the middle. Very dry and quite a lot of lactic acid in this one. Enjoyable but a bit too tart for my liking.

I am not understanding the somewhat tepid response to this one. From simply a beverage stand point, this tastes damn good and is super refreshing. Perfect for the season. It tastes like a Berliner but with a pleasing fruit-like sweetness from the cactus that you'd really just have to try to appreciate. I am a big fan of this particular sweetness, by the way. I also love the desert being evoked every time I look at the can. Nothing like some marvelous poetic imagery to go along with your taste buds being tickled. I am unsure what people were expecting from this one, but the balance between flavors I find quite favorable. This is one of my favorite American takes on a Berliner Weisse.

I really like Carton beers on the whole but this one tasted like bile to me. I struggled to drink more than a few sips.

A clean sour with a touch of saltiness that leaves you wanting more. Straight from the can, in a glass, or off the draft this beer delivers. The perfect summer session sour, I picked up a case at first touch of my lips.

Slightly sour, I guess what is the dune fruit but not much else.
