DATE: June 21, 2018... OCCASION: the NBA draft--what will the Cavaliers do?... GLASSWARE: Duvel tulip... pours a jet black body that supports a clumpy, thick brown head whipping its lacing into sun bursts.... lacing is uneven but attractive... speaking of bursts, this rushes forth with floral air, sparked by lemon citrus and tamped by thick, dank earthy notes... grape, leaf, tobacco, and roasted malts up the ante on this experience.... drinkable? Yes, indeed, with a sweet start and a creamy, cordial warming that settles the throat... the teeth bear the brunt of the 100 IBUs, and I don't mind the rattle... the smoothness and chewiness strikes a nice balance... this beer empowers and wallops the wit with its 10% ABV... its booziness is apparent halfway through the grunt, though its blunted finish detracts slightly from the experience... worth getting from a grunt, though, as its lighter notes popped from the bottle...

16 oz can dated 4/11/17. Forgot to drink these. Probably still good.

L: 2F slightly off-white head with good retention, lots of lacing, and a cap and ring. Beer is black.

S: Basically some nice straightforward roasted malts and grains and some dankness. Simple.

T: Follows nose. Roasted malty goodness with some yeastiness. Finish very slightly bitter and a tiny bit of ABV heat.

F: Medium body, light to medium carbonation. Construction and balance are very solid. Drinks like a champ even with high ABV.

O: Right up there with Epitome. Carton has these black ales down.

Looks jet black(end of SRM color chart). 2" lingering mocha colored foamy head. Smells dank, earthy, hops, fresh cut grass. Taste is mind blowing in a way. I am expecting a malt forward beer because of the color. It actually tastes like a triple IPA that it really is. A hop bomb at that. Subtle sweet malt finish. Feels well balanced with carbonation and viscosity. Not viscous like some high ABV beers are. Overall this is a solid beer in my humble opinion. The label backwards and the name have got to go. I started getting cross eyed in the liquor store reading the can backwards.

Canned 4/11/2017. A fitting black ale/"black IPA" for Spring: aroma brings to mind wild green onion and the "budding" of new, juicy, fruit. Retains the roastiness and yeast-presence of Epitome, but lands as decidedly less extreme; sweeter, smoother, and more given to the green.

Pours black with a 1/2" off white head. Not much aroma to talk about, maybe some roasted notes. Taste is mostly roasted malt sweetness with a touch of bitterness. Taste mellows with time between sips. Feel is excellent, there's no indication this is a 10% brew and the mouthfeel is excellent. Overall, it's very pleasant if not easy to define.

Status says retired, but mine was canned on 5/11/18. Need a mirror to read the can, except the legal stuff.

Canned 4/11/2017. Poured into Carton teku glass. It pours black as coal with one finger of khaki-colored head and lacing with lots of carbonation. It's a really pretty pour! The smell is rather subdued: mostly roasted malt, grass, and a whiff of tobacco smoke. But it tastes great! It has a roasty malt backbone with a hint of burnt coffee and lots of bitter, biting hops. It's rather acidic, in a good way. To me, it's more bitter, and danker, than Epitome but others may disagree. It's medium-bodied, with lively carbonation, and its 10% ABV gives it lots of heft. Overall, it's just terrific. While I prefer Epitome, that's not surprising because that is my favorite Carton offering. I think it has more depth of taste. Alterego (I don't type well enough to do it backwards) just proves how good Carton is at brewing Black Ales. There are now two of them that challenge the best of the style. Bravo, Carton!

Augie - this one needs a name, and until then, AT LEAST an origin story. For example, IDIPA(tm) seems a great name, kinda goes with TEDxAsburyPark IDentity 5/20/2017. Why not just ALTER EGO? or Alt-ID?

Happy to be 3rd review of Alt Ego IPA. I've long favored black IPAs, ales and lagers for that real or imagined sweetness, feel and char that comes with stout, porter and the blacks. How about 420 Black for it's burning hemp quality and aroma?

A) Pours a fresh black body that spackles the glass with lace over a spackly, dark lumpy head.
S) Wet Paint in a Flower store, stoned painters munching on green onions. Somehow, the black body renders experience (be it real, reefed or imagined)... sweeter, smoother, hempier, smokier, and greener
T) Paint continues to come to mind - as the sweet latexy scent of drying paint - as this one paints it black in a great way: a roasty malt backbone with lots of strong coffee, with flower store perfume, grass, and ample bitter, biting hops. Carton's most bitter, dank brew?
F) FIne mid body with great cleansing see-saw finish that lands on dry and clean.
O) Of my favorite styles, this is a great one.
