Can you strive for meh? Should you? At the height of midsummer there is genius in a beer that is “like sex in a canoe.” Simple, clean, classic flavors put together in a format that is meant to stop you from being thirsty more than to transcend. For Canoe, we looked to the indigenous classic of the Atlantic Northeast, the cream ale, and respected its most traditional constraints. Barley and corn, on ale yeast, fermented cold and decorated with hops more than flavored. The simplest of American beers for the simplest of reasons: It’s hot, early on a summer evening, and you’re thirsty. Drink Rabaska ‘cause so far that meat hasn’t learned to grill itself.

Enjoying this Rabaska on 9-7 evening after my own kayak among reeds....

The word rabaska is a Canadianism from New France. It is derived from athapaskaw, a word common to Algonquin and Cree. This word designates the Athabasca River and its original meaning is "grass and reeds here and there".[Wikipedia]

a) Cloudy gold body with a dense, lasting 1 finger head, offering retention, lacing, cap and ring. Nice.
s) Lots for cream ale: Orange, Lemon, yeast, melon, herbs.
t) More orange, melon, and lemon, creamy lactose, with the right bitter finish. How it should be done.
f) Medium, ample carbonation, crisp and refreshing drink, great food beer, summer beer.
o) Enjoyed w grilled onion, pepper, tomatoes, basil, fennel from garden and chicken sausage - (Costco).

Picked up a 3 pack at the brewery. Pours a golden yellow with slight haze but you can clearly see thru the glass. Smell is of hay, malt, faint hop prescence. The taste up front is of a solid pale ale but switches to your favorite Lager midway. Ends with a slight bitterness on the palatte.

Solid beer to crush all day by the pool. Makes for a solid table beer.

Can dated 7/3/17. Poured into ale glass.

L: Cloudy light gold. 2F head, some retention, lacing, cap and ring.

S: Some orange and lemon, lactose, yeast, and malts.

T: A little bit of orange and lemon, yeastiness and breadiness, and some creamy lactose. Very slightly bitter finish.

F: Medium bodied, pretty aggressive carbonation, making for a crisp and refreshing drink despite the higher ABV than its little brother, Canoe. Good balance and construction.

O: I like it! Carton is doing some amazing things with cream ales.

I had this on draught in a tavern. 16 oz. pour served in a pint glass. It pours a hazy, dirty golden color with one finger, of bright white, foamy head and lacing that persisted through the pour. The nose features creamed corn, cracker, and a faint whiff of citrus. The taste opens as expected with sweet corn, and cracker, along with a hint of lemon peel and grass. But it's not as sweet as a typical cream ale and there's a light but noticeable hoppiness at the finish. It's more complex than other cream ales I've tasted. The feel is light and crisp with really pleasant carbonation. And at 6% you can drink a couple easily. Overall, this is a fun beer to drink and perfect for the summer. Carton is very adept at brewing cream ales and, while Rabaska isn't as adventuresome as SS Cream or Shinshu, it's well-crafted and pleasing.
