Thrilled to see the smiling faces at Carton last night, raving about the fresh off the presses: 02210 - Boston (and Canton)
Part of the INTELier, or &telier collaborations with other master brewers, this one may be the best yet.
Trillium of Canton & Carton or Atlantic High. Trillium means native Lily. Carton means "out of the box". This brew is marriage of floral and "out of the box". Wine like beer, as subtle in flavor as Verncaccia, or a newly discovered variety or terroire.
Hops lean floral with 2 experimentals (which also have 5 digit numbers like zip codes) along with Nelson and French Aramis.
a) The team has built a floral hoppy beer on an amber reddish base, that makes the crisp off white head float like a cloud at sunset, while it laces the glass like cirrus.
s) The team built a nose of flower shop hops, that are more pungent green leaf - than flower, pollen, and pistil, and which lands you in a pleasant, but subtle fruit salad of the floral, fructose spectrum: Melons, berries, peach, nectarine.
t) Following this aromatic melange, the beer explodes in your mouth, with the balancing peppery, kissy hop bite needed to make masculine the musky and floral elements. It's heady and leans more and more toward marmalade, or a long simmering tea, flowers and fruit reduction, over laid on light wheat toast.
f) The see-saw of feminine and masculine in this beer, resolve in a making a happy place of your mouth. Worth savoring, and meditation, as the flavors last like a good firework show.
o) Bold, big, flowerful/powerful. Loved the beer as it raised the peaks of floral, fruit and bitter all at once.
Definitely, let 02210 warm to cask and savor it.

Balanced like pale ale but strong enough for American IPA, the collaboration between Trillium and Carton sells a scent and taste of hop high but its bitterness is restrained. Not quite hazy and not quite imperial, this joint venture beer straddles the style fences quite well.

Medium amber and cast in a moderate hazy glow, the translucent ale is capped with a pillowy white froth. Juicy aromas of orchard fruit, tropical fruit and citrus waft about the senses while a taste of honey, caramel and cashew frame its malty upstart.

The hops blossom on the middle palate as the malt sweetness begins to recede. Hops roll onto the tongue with the succulence of peach, apricot and orange that seem to play equal rolls as the hop intensity meets the level of maltiness. A growing bitterness aids in the balance while trailing with soft pine, tropical fruit rinds and an overall peppery, sprucy grip.

Medium bodied but trending full for IPA, the lingering maltiness keeps the flavors on the forefront of the session while sacrificing dryness and its sense of drinkability. A vodka-like spice frames the alcohol effects while a medium length aftertaste of fruit peels and fragrant spruce and cedar outweighs the fruit in the end.

Whoa, this is weird (in a good way). I get a big nose of pear and chardonnay sans oak, with an odd herbal, maybe sage? note. It's hard to get an unusual hop character in an IPA, but this is certainly a good example. Almost sweet apricot and pear up front. Finishes with bitter orange peel and lemon. Quite dry, fairly bitter almost astringent. Delicious, but the bitterness could be dialed back a touch.

Dark orange with flimsy white head. Aroma of citrus rind, booze, grass, pine, tile cleaner, candied peanuts. Tastes of citrus rind, grass, pine, orange candy, orange sorbet, warming booze, and some big bitterness. Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

L-Pours a semi-clear amber hue, 1/4 inch head with little retention and mild lacing

S-aroma is very faint.......sweet malts, honey and melon

T-Similar to the nose.......sweet sugary malts, ripe melon, some bitter pine near the finish........seems more like an old school DIPA than the new juice bomb hazy IPAs that are all the rage.

F-Chewy, oily...carbonation is less than medium.......body is close to medium

O-More old school DIPA than juice bombs more readily associated with Trillium........was hoping for something special from these two fine breweries. This is solid but somewhat disappointing given the expectations

pours a deep gold with a thick head, looks pretty awesome. slight haze but not a milkshake

smell is heavy, ripened fruit and honey

taste is somewhat boozy and the body is big. for 7% this is a weird dIPA. should be a regular IPA but the body is much bigger than a regular beer. they fit a ton into 7% but it's a unique touch

I had this on draught at a restaurant. Paired well with a bison burger. It pours a hazy, honey-orange color with a a thin, milk-white head. I'm sure it would look better poured from a can. There's lots of orange on the nose, along with light spice, floral hops and a whiff of apricot. The taste opens with a blast of bitter, biting hops and spice. The orange and apricot come later. It's very dry and crisp. I was surprised that it's only 7% ABV; it drinks above that and there is a noticeable astringent burn at the finish. This isn't a bad DIPA but it's not what I expected from a collaboration between Carton and Trillium.
