The World’s Turned Upside Down from Carton Brewing. Received on 20/1/21 for the Extreme Beer Fest – Cyberspace (2021) from Half-Time, Poughkeepsie, NY. $ 109.99 (Including tax and shipping). This is a 12 oz can ($ 0.702/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 9/2/21. (Note: I use DD/MM/YY protocol.)
Stamped on bottom of can “???” – unable to read because the stamp goes directly over the bottom ridge – “2020” on front of can label. Served at 50.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 57.3 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Carnelian (SRM ?), hazy.
Body – Sienna (SRM ?), murky. When rear-lite, sinopia and barely translucent. Slight effervescence.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.5 cm, aggressive center pour), caramel with pinkish cast, high density, and fizzy, short retention, diminishing to a 0.5 mm crown and a thinner partial cap.
Lacing – None. None expected at 12% ABV.
Aroma – 4.5 – Pineapple roasted in brown sugar, no hops, no malt, no yeast, no cherries.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins sweet but not cloying, weak brown sugar and pineapple with a hint of cherries. No hops, no malt, no yeast. Some barrel at the end.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, almost syrupy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Liquid pineapple upside-down cake, sans cake. Really pleasing. I’ll take a case, please!

Part of EBF Cyberspace 2021

For round 4, we have a very strange one. Maraschino cherry in a beer is one thing, but grilled pineapple?!?! Now, that seems like something extreme. This is a rare time when I’m hoping a barleywine has a decent hop presence, just because I think the fruit will make it a bit sweet and the hops will balance that

Pours a clearish ruby amber with a finger of pink tinted head that fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing

The aroma is very interesting for a barleywine, it’s quite fruity. I’m picking up on notes of fresh pineapple, pecans, brown sugar, molasses, and a touch of tart cherry. I’m loving this, and the lack of hops does not hurt this at all

On the front end I’m picking up on notes of sweet cherry, toffee, and some general sweet malt. The swallow brings notes of tart pineapple, brown sugar, sweet cherry, and a touch of sherry

A medium body pairs with moderate carbonation for a very rich and smooth beer. Finishes surprisingly dry, but the alcohol is obvious

I fucking love this. I wish so badly that it wasn’t an EBF exclusive. Incredible

Oh wow. This one is fairly incredible. It has a very unique color, a wonderful taste, and a beautiful aroma. It's heavenly. I want another one. Sooner, rather than later.

Appearance:
Is that orange?

Aroma:
It smells like fruity whiskey or apricot. Yep, that’s barely wine.

Taste:
Boozy. This is why boozy is a legit taste.

Palate:
I’ve never seen an orange beer. I’ve had orange soda, sure, but I really like this orange beer. It’s like Sam and his green eggs and ham. Do you like orange beer and jam/spam/ham? The world may be upside down once you’ve found an orange beer in your hand.

Careful on the pour. Sediment on the bottom. Dark ruby color. Pineapple on the nose. Really surprised at the strong cherry flavor. Yet still smooth for 12%.

Don't drink a lot of "barleywine" but this one makes me want to try and drink more ... This is really good, albeit a bit "boozy" to my palette, and worth drinking for sure!

I'm stuck outside avoiding the kids. So in my pittance of a torchlight I'm seeing this gem as ruby tinged amber in hue. Slight head that quickly drops off. Minimal retention and lacing.
The nose bursts with cherries and an undercurrent of apple. Then after a few pensive seconds and a few inhalations, I'm picking up the pineapple, along with fruit salad. Very interesting.
Flavor is kind of melange-ey like a blended port or Rhone wine. It's a total blend of fruit, smooth malt notes, and for a barleywine..."juicy in a fruit juice meets mimosa kind of way.
Fell is spot on for a barleywine, slightly shy of medium mouthfeel. Low carbonation. Smooth finish.
Overall, a very interesting and tasty take on a barleywine.

A - Hazy garnet color with very thin lacing and no carbonation.

S - Green apple, cherry, and light sweet toffee malt.

T - Very complex with multiple layers: cherry, green apple, brandy, with some sweet caramel malt lurking below on the back end.

M - Thick, viscous, and lip smacking sticky.

O - This is a very unique 'Barley worth checking out.

Well it is extreme! Orange brown pour, surface islands spot the top. Smell has the pineapple and cherry especially powerfully, but also getting apple, light amounts of wood, plenty of sweet booze (maybe brandy) and candied orange. The barley itself is hidden until the taste where it and the booze run to meet the pineapple and cherry, kinds of giving me a watergate salad complexion, very sweet. Yet I get a lot of apple, caramel and lesser amounts of marshmallow and grape. It is heavily streamlined toward the adjuncts, yet I can't stop noticing more complexity as I sip. Feel is very sweet though, cloys a bit as it warms, lighter, thinner, and very smooth but has a syrupy finish that detracts. It truly is a unique experience, I love the creativity in the vision, but I don't need to have again

Pours a copper color tinged with red hues on the edges, and a minimal tan head that evacuates the premises almost immediately, as expected for a beer of this gravity. The nose is toffee and caramel up front, then some nice barrel notes, and the pineapple (minimal) and cherries (maximal) at the end.

The taste is a bit boozy, and there’s toffee and caramel, but man am I digging the pineapple and especially the cherries - it like an upside down cake in an old fashioned. Positively delicious, IMHO.

I don't know what to make of this beer. Its super interesting, unique, extreme ... all of the above?

Pours a dark reddish, burgundy color. Pretty much opaque. Thin off-white head dissipates quickly leaving no residual head. Aroma is dominated by roasted, grilled pineapple and sweet cherries. Not much else is able to get through that. Its also quite sweet on the nose. Taste follows the nose with strong notes of cherry, roasted pineapple, fresh pineapple fruit, apple, grapes - lovely sweetness coming through from the fruit, but not overly cloying. The barrel notes are nicely balanced on the back end. I think if you approach this as a fruited barleywine it makes a lot of sense and it actually quite delicious, especially as it warms up. Feel is moderately bodied, smooth carbonation, really easy dinking given the ABV.

Overall this is a unique beer - and given that its brewed for extreme beer fest, its totally appropriate for the event. Im not sure this is a beer I would pick up to drink again, but it was really enjoyable to drink this once.
