Very Good
Brunch. Dinner. Grub.Brunch. Dinner. Grub.
Notes: B.D.G. (Brunch. Dinner. Grub.) Country Ale: Matching the right beer to the right food is a wonderful assignment. The contemplation of point and counter-point can often be as much fun as the reward of good pairing. Sadly, in a life well lived there is not always time to contemplate what dinner will be, let alone what beverage will play best with it. Here we have selected malts to evoke the crusty breads that sit well next to every meal and seasoned it with the lemony, tarragon/thyme notes of Aramis hops. A go-to, food friendly ale for the table. Drink B.D.G because you are what you eat... and drink.

Poured from a screw top growlette.

A: Brown, soil. Deep amber, almost a burnt, burnt orange on the edges. Minimal carbonation, as expected. Still, a small, white ring of bubbles hang around outer edges. Rotating the glass produces a fair amount of nice alcohol legs. Looks well made. Wish it was a deeper color of brown. As is, it looks a little watery - tea like.

S: Dark roast. Bread - light, flaky biscuit. The malt dominates, but there is a definite hop presence. The (herbal) hops are apparent enough that I'm expecting a bite, not typical of a brown ale. I like it, as I very much enjoy DFH Indian Brown.

T: Follows the nose with it's roast and breadiness. Faint nutty character is there. As quickly as the malt hits, it vanishes as the hops take over the middle and finish. Lingering bitterness doesn't let you soon forget the hops' role in this beer. Taste offers much more than the nose for me. Especially as it warms. As the beer warms, the hops remain present, but give way to an almost chocolatey taste that I wasn't expecting. Quite enjoyable.

F: Lesser side of medium bodied. Even still, the beer manages an almost creamy mouthfeel. This, out of a growlette at 3 or 4 days old, was a surprise. Would love to see what it's like fresh on tap at the source.

O: The bones of a standard, solid brown ale. Other than the deeper brown color I prefer on a brown ale, nothing is missing. The hops add a new enough dimension to make this a memorable brown ale. Taste manages to surpass both look and smell...and that's what really matters.

Awesome brew! these guys continue to amaze me. Pours a nice thick medium dark head, the aroma and taste are moderate flavors of brown bread with subtle notes of caramel and roasted malts.I sense some citrus flavor hiding in the mix and a slight nutty flavor also. The mouthfeel is excellent. I very much enjoyed this brew and would purchase again.

Bottom Line: Carton Kicks A$$

Picked up a growler of this from Brouwerij Lane.

It poured a nice amber with a solid 1" head. Smelled malts, some rye, and a bit of smokyness. Taste was sorta like SN ruthless rye but not quite as hoppy. Crisp and refreshing mouthfeel. This is a pretty good session beer. Solid year-round beer from Carton. I look forawrd to their 1st limited release and hope them a prosperous future.

Been a long while since I've had a nut-brown ale. Here goes:

A: Dark brown; pretty murky. Tan head that leaves a lot of lacing. Good.

S: Quite good. Lots of hazelnut, brown sugar, roasted nuts, and a faint smattering of hops.

T: Follows the nose, which is a good thing. Roasted malt and lots of nuts. Sweet with a touch of hops. Overall, quite good.

F: Alright, good carbonation and thickness. Nothing special, though.

O: Solid beer. Will have again.
