Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The key to a sessionable beer is the way it evolves over time well spent. Here we took an extremely dark malt bill and smashed it against the sweetness of milk, then we wafted black currant notes of Bullion hops through the middle. Nuanced to keep it an interesting part of a gathering while neither dominating nor being inconsequential to banter. Drink Carton Of Milk because it does a session good.

Carton Brewing "Carton Of Milk" Stout
Poured via nitrogen dispense at Fountain Porter in Philadelphia on 11/08/2013 ($4 pint during Happy Hour)

Typical stout appearance. Looks like a pint of Guinness, black-brown with a creamy light tan head above. Is this always poured via nitrogen? Excellent head retention and lacing. Really faultless with full sheets of lace along the side made up of many rings of lace stuck together.

Typical stout aroma with roasty, dark malts; black coffee acidity; and dark chocolate. There's nothing missing, nor does anything odd stand out, just as expected. Fresh and bright at least.

Typical stout flavor. Oddly, it's not that "milk stout"-like. There IS a hint of lactose - and I'm not sure how I'm even finding that because lactose is not really a sweet sugar (it's not a sweet beer, it's actually quite dry), but it's noticeable so lactose must have some flavor to it. Or am I imagining that based on the knowledge that it's a milk stout? I think not; it reminds me a wee bit of Mackeson's (although who knows who's even brewing that now, or what it tastes like today). It's good but it's not as full-flavored as I'd expected...

...nor does it have the mouthfeel of a milk stout. It's thicker than Guinness, that's for sure, but it's not nearly as full in the mouth as I remember Mackeson's (brewed by Whitbread) before they got bought out by InBev. Still, it's OK. It's quite smooth... so I again questions, is this beer intended to be served via nitrogen dispense?

Putting aside the question of whether or not this is a "proper" milk stout, I'll simply address it from a hedonistic side (because as it does have lactose added, it's obviously a "true" milk stout). I liked it. I'd have had another if there weren't so many other good choices at hand. Worth trying.

A - Black pour with no foam retention. Lacing is minimal. Actually, it looked relatively flat for a stout.

S - Scents of roasted malt and cocoa is present. There is also a smell of vanilla and caramel. Has an overall smell of a good candy bar.

T - Has a strong flavor of roasted malt, sugary chocolate, and a bit of almonds.

M - Light bodied stout that is complex on flavor and light on the stomach. Easy to have a few of these.

O - Not a bad stout, and a sessionable one at that.

This beer is ironically refreshing, not heavy. Toasty, choclolate and coffee taste with a hint more hops than other milk stouts. Dangerously easy to drink, but eight of them didn't kill me. A ton of flavor for a low alcohol beer. I like the style Carton's brews.

Had a pint at Owl Farm and loved it. It's a deep, flavorful milk stout with the drinkability of a great dry stout. There are big roasted cocoa and fresh coffee tastes, and then the lactose sweetness slides in to balance the beer. Great balance, fun to drink, go get a glass.
