MONKEY CHASED THE WEASEL
Sour Ale
ABV: 3.9% | IBU: Sour | SRM: Ojo de Gallo

The backyard of our brewery has a mulberry tree that drops its fruit in the first days of summer. We moved into our building during early summer 2011, tracking a bright purple path through our new home with every laden step. It was then we decided: if mulberry was going to get that deep into the brewery, it probably should get into a beer as well. Stealing a process from Berliners, we let the lactics in a wheated mash sour up to a green apple/lemon level, accentuating the bright side of the mulberry profile. Meant for quaffing when there is no reason to avoid direct sunlight on balmy summer days, drink Monkey Chased The Weasel because there is more sun than moon at the top.

Poured from 16 oz. can into Carton teku glass. It pours a slightly hazy, golden straw color with a frothy, milk-white head and lacing that clung to the glass through the pour. It has an interesting smell of sour wheat and some funky spice. I'm not familiar with the smell of mulberry but I guess that was present, as well. The taste was also truly unique: like combining chardonnay with a marzen: it is both fruity and sour, and malty in an earthy way. It's quite difficult to describe. There is also a funky spiciness that reminded me of a Belgian Pale Ale. It is light and crisp, with lively carbonation, and at only 3.9% ABV it is extremely drinkable. This may be the strangest review I've written on BA. This is an unusual beer but a thoroughly enjoyable one.

Traded for this beer a while back and finally got around to it on this balmy night, knowing that there was hardly any alcohol in this. For being so "weak" up front, I really enjoyed this as the flavors meshed well together and there was enough body and carbonation here to make this lively without feeling forced at the same time!

Good pour to this as the beer had a straw hue, frothy head, and a good amount of bubbles in it and as was expected, hardly any lacing left behind once I took some sips. Lots of Mulberry, blueberry, and sour apple in the nose with even more in the taste. Juicy, sour, and lively, this was so light while not being terribly tart in addition. Enough bready malt, white grape, and lemon acidity could be felt, which rounded this out as there was mild funk and spice in the back once the beer went down. Plenty of citrus juice and some citric acid was what I could pick out in the mouthfeel, keeping me from enjoying too much at once!

This was as session as a beer of that sort could be, though I only had one can on hand. Would be nice to give this another go as there wasn't anything else I've ever had quite like this - nursery rhyme aside, this was a great take on the style that begged for another helping. Like a chardonnay with faint hops and malt, this was another reason why Carton has put New Jersey on the proverbial craft beer map. Fun stuff!

Straw to golden in color and a bit cloudy. Very minimal head and no lacing.

Citrus, berry, acid and some random sweetness.

Taste is similar to the nose, lemon, berry, acid tartness, and minor malt.

Mouth is medium light and crisp with average carbonation and a super dry finish.

Very drinkable and not overwhelmingly sour. Perhaps not the best weiss to a purist but very satisfactory. I would recommend trying this if available.

16oz Can

Huge thanks to the man, the myth, the legend, SammyJaxxxx! Monkey chased the weasel sports a body of slightly tarnished bronze. Pale orange takes hold when backlit and the mild haziness diffuses the light enough to make the whole body glow. The dirty white head is easy to rouse on the pour, and like a lot of Berliners, it fizzles out fairly quickly to a couple islands floating about the body. It's a good looking beer.

The nose is packed full of wheat. There's some of the fresh cracked variety but mostly that damp wheat-y twang. There is a nice accompaniment of slightly acidic, slightly sweet berry that I'm unfamiliar with but can only assume is mulberry. The sweat and sour play over the damp wheat is an enjoyable aspect over the twang-y wheat. It's fairly simple but also mouthwateringly appetizing.

The damp wheat is acidic and punchy out of the corner. It backs off slightly in the middle when a touch of mulberry sweetness joins the party, a good balance at this point. The acidity, both wheat and berry, picks up again before the finish. Again, though a little simple, this beer tastes good. My only knock is that the finish seems to disappear. It's acidic, you swallow and then nothing. There isn't much backend.

The body is on the light side of the spectrum and the carbonation is soft to the point of being nearly unnoticeable besides a little snap on the swallow. The tartness is refreshing and makes for a highly drinkable libation. The finish slowly dries up and leaves behind a touch of the tart. I could drink numerous amounts of this beer in the blazing hot sun.

Monkey Chased the Weasel is a fun, quenching, delicious summer drinker. Its wheat-y all the way through and the mulberries and a unique twist. Have many of these at the ready 'cause tit's a "one after the other" beer. Thanks again, SammyJaxxxx!
