Strictly the "New" Ostens Beerhouse, for it moved from its original scruffy lovely well worn 'Old' location into bigger and better premises some years ago. I had the distinct pleasure to imbibe at the “Old” Ostens Beerhouse during my first Belgium Easter Trip in 1994. The Old Ostends Beer House moved some years later into new premises, and whilst some of the cozy character was lost, the warmth of the welcome and beer list was not.

Run by a fellow Englishman, Tim Smith, who once worked for the UK Railways. Tim is a "quiet reserved chap" as we say in England, but nonetheless an exceptionally knowledgeable chap when it comes to Belgium Beer. My experience is that if it's busy he is polite but curt, if it's a quiet period and not busy, he may engage in conversation, if he's had a few beers - he definitely will!! A seriously nice guy, but don't take it personally if he doesn't talk to you at busy times.

The “New” TOBH Combines the best attributes of a Belgium Café, yet has the coziness of an English pub for me, which is why I like it. The beer list is good, a solid 150+ bottled options (maybe more) and 5 draft taps including De Koninck. The bottle list offers an excellent spectrum of beers, including "Floreffe La Meilleure" from Lefèbvre, which was the highlight of my last visit (Hmmm... Mint Humbugs in a Glass!!!). No Food, except Snacks - for it's a serious place to sit, talk, discuss and drink Belgium beer.

They say Ostende is more English than Belgium; this Bar is definitely a combination of the best of both worlds for me. After here, go to the Cafe Botteltje, which is in the Hotel Marion, 'almost' opposite and next door, so don't bother putting your Coat on, even it is raining!! - as many beer guides and locals will tell you.

Well worth a whole day. I have many happy memories of this place, both in its former existence and now its Phoenix version.

A fairly modern looking space with over 160 biers. This cafe is located opposite the Hotel Marion, where the Botteltje resides. Their list is nice, with lots of Flemmish biers. The English proprietor is very outspoken about breweries, biers, and even those unwelcomed "lager-lout" Britts that cross the channel into Oostend. It's location makes the Oostend Bierhuis a place to check-out, and enjoy a great bier.
