Notes / Commercial Description:
What more can be said about this beer that hasn't already been tweeted about? Well, if you've been living on Mars then you don't know that this beer is Named after the Mighty Carl, Patron Saint of many STL bars, and will only be on planet Earth for a short time. The beer itself was brewed as a HellesBock which is simply a lighter colored, hoppyish-lager that is brewed to a stronger strength (Bock). The Man himself is much harder to describe. Some would say Charming. Some would say Handsome and Debonair. Some would even claim him to be Charitable, Friendly and Trustworthy. Who are these people? #thanksforpaintingandtuckpointingourentirebuildingcarl

On tap at Shamrocks.

A: Served a deep copper color with a small head and just bits of lacing.

S: Aroma is mild with roasted malt, bit of grain and spice.

T: Taste follows with a mild roasted malt, mix of caramel and bit of honey. Has a easy bitterness and dry finish.

F: Fairly medium body, subtle crispness, smooth and nicely balanced.

O: Good beer for the style.

Pours a clear, copper/gold color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of slight hop, sweet malt, slight pale malt, and a hint of caramel malt. Fits the style of a Maibock / Helles Bock. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong pale malt, hops, slight sweet malt, slight caramel malt and a hint of sugar. Overall, good appearance, aroma, feel, but lacking in blend; again this was way too sweet for the style.

On tap at The Bridge in St. Louis on 7/2/12.

A - Poured a clear, amber color with a one-finger, white head of foam. It left some sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of caramel and toffee with some floral notes.

T - It tasted very spiced with sweet caramel and toffee. Good balance with a touch of bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied lager with a dry, clean finish.

O - This is a pretty nice helles bock. Another solid offering by The Civil Life.

a little stronger and a little sweeter, this was very good, but actually my least favorite beer of the great many i enjoyed here at civil life. clear and honey colored in the mug, with an inch of lazy white head. it smells like its a little sweeter than what i am used to in a helles type lager, and not quite so fresh and distinct on the yeast, more of a english and german hybrid there, with some staleness to it in that classic way. the malts are sweeter and simple, light in color but quite full bodied for the style, and it has a sort of hearty and even nutritious overall vibe to it. not the most nuanced of their beers, probably better suited to the spring time than the fall here, but its well made like all of their stuff, its just not a style or profile of flavors that appeals to me all that much, especially next to some of these other amazing beers they make here. still, the quality is high and the recipe is distinct, even if the beer is a one and done for me. if you like them sweet and a little filling, give this strange lager a shot.
