Brewed by:

Kentucky, United States

Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.70%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Essentially an Imperial version of our famed KY Ryed Chiquen, this strong, rye-barrel aged, imperial rye amber ale is very rich. A prominent bourbon nose gives way to a full body carrying lots of rye spice, vanilla, cherry, caramel, wood, and warm alcohol flavors. The Maris Otter base malt lends this beer a full, grainy, almost biscuit character indicative of English influence, but the Munich and melanoidin malts lend a German, almost Oktoberfesty note that pairs well with the significant barrel flavors derived from a three month stint in freshly dumped rye bourbon barrens.

I'm really not sure if I got a bad bottle or what, but this was a drain pour. This was a very sour barleywine, almost funky, not much sweetness. The only other barleywine I've had like this was a 4 years old barleywine (Old Guardian) that aged on a shelf improperly. Disappointed.

Appearance- Received with no head but I'm guessing it would have been a light beige. The body shows as a medium to dark amber that appears as a medium amber in the light.

Nose- Not getting much of anything at the moment. This is pretty much dead. I've gotten nothing and even swirling shows shit.

Taste- Starts with some cherry, some citrus, bits of rye. Barrel aging isn't showing itself as of yet but there is a good amount of spice. Good amount of breadiness. Some grain, some rye. Nothing at the moment that really distinguishes itself. Some straw, a little bit of grass. Fairly subdued while being pretty complex. No idea of the almost 13% alcohol. At the moment, good to really good, wish it would show more complexity of barrel aging. Some caramel, burnt toast. Extremely mellow for 13%. Some notion of caramel. It tends toward the Rye on Rye but its not as sweet. Some vinous notions express the barrel aging more. As the beer opens it becomes better and better. Still suspended between good and really good. I pretty much agree with its rating.

Mouthfeel- Light to medium bodied with slight syrup to the texture. Carbonation is light.

Drinkability- Very easygoing and the bourbon notes only show themselves at the end. Almost a little too accessible for a barrel aged beer. It could be more demonstrative. Quite delightful for a 4 dollar 6 oz pour. Hmm.

Overall- Good to really good but not as good as it supposes. Leaves a bit of grain that structures it but doesn't make it stand out. Fun beer that you should try but doesn't do anything new.

A - Pours a muddied deep amber color, rather dark. Nearly zero head even after pouring as aggressively as possible. incredibly thin outer ring, almost unnoticeable, thin (little) lacing slides down glass almost immediately.

S - Lots of rye, woody/oaky bourbon aromas, vanilla, cherry - rye whisky forward.

T - Warming bourbon, vanilla, rye spice, cherry, wood, and a bit of sweet caramel sneaks past the warming boozyness. Finish/aftertaste is pure vanilla rye whisky and alcohol.

M - Full bodied, super thick and hardly any carbonation at all. Really smooth drinking but suprisingly/dangerously drinkable. A remarkable feat for what it is, imo.
