Where sweetness of bourbon meets the savory sweetness of Bock- the imagination of Louisville brewers have done what historic monks couldn't. With a kiss of the heavenly elixir, the natural flavor of double bock never had it so good!
With its russet, reddish brown pour, highlights of chestnut and garnet ribbon through. Modestly hazed, the lager sheds an ivory blanket that skirts the beer wall to wall. Its light moderate retention and light lace falls still nearing the session's end.
Bold malty aromas flood the nose with bready-sweet scents nearing spice cake and rum. Toasty, nutty and maple all waft about while the growing caramel, coconut and oak layer upon. Unmistakable bourbon alcohol tingle the nose upon the first sip.
Its malty sweetness commands the balance early and often. Honey and toast at first, but more savory crusty-sweet notes emerge. Almond, cashew and pecan meet a maple, date and fig-ridden center. Balanced only by the most tepid of herbal hops, its long and savory finish relies on oaken spice, alcohol and low bittering.
Its sweetness is hearty to the mouth as its varying degrees of caramel offer a mild cloying texture that renders the beer much more sipping than quaffing beer. Its long finish trends bourbony, spicy and port-like.
Where the bourbony sweetness and malty sweetness have their charm, I'm missing the deeply savory melanoidin tone that classic dopplebock does. This would provide the much-needed balance to contain the booze and keep the taste squarely focused on the dark lager.
